While hands-free driving technology is far from flawless, there are a few exceptions worth mentioning. Tesla’s Full-Self Driving suite, General Motors’ Super Cruise, and Ford’s BlueCruise have emerged as the frontrunners in this race for automotive autonomy. Notably, Ford’s BlueCruise has recently gained approval from the European Commission, allowing owners of Ford and Lincoln vehicles in 15 European countries to experience this cutting-edge technology. Impressively, Ford has already sold over 420k BlueCruise-equipped vehicles worldwide.

This latest expansion follows the initial introduction of BlueCruise in Germany, Great Britain, and Spain. Additionally, customers who purchase new Mustang Mach-E vehicles in countries with Blue Zones will also have access to this advanced driver assistance system. As a result, BlueCruise is now the most widely available Level 2 system approved by regulators in the European Union. With access to over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of designated highways across Europe, drivers can embark on epic road trips spanning multiple countries, covering thousands of kilometers, all while enjoying the luxury of hands-free driving.

Ford BlueCruise hands-free tech approved by EU

Ford BlueCruise approved by the European Commission for owners to use in 15 European countries

ord BlueCruise hands-free driving technology can now be used in a total of 15 European countries, following approval by the EU’s regulator, the European Commission.

This unlocks access to more than 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of designated highways across Europe, called Blue Zones, allowing customers to take a road trip across multiple countries using the ADAS feature where fitted on Ford cars.

Ford says the Level 2 “hands-off, eyes-on” advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is now also the most widely available system of its kind in Europe. BlueCruise available and approved for customers to purchase on all new Mustang Mach-E vehicles sold in a total of 20 countries globally. Additionally, current owners with earlier model year Mustang Mach-E vehicles in select countries will be eligible to receive a software update in the future to activate BlueCruise.

In 2023, BlueCruise was the first system of its kind to gain approval when it launched in the UK.

I used General Motors’ hands-free driving system extensively when I tested the Cadillac Lyriq recently, and I found it to be both competent and extremely helpful. The automated driving feature was so useful, in fact, that returning to the drudgery of manually driving my 2010 Subaru felt genuinely deflating. If you think that sounds like a ridiculous, first-world complaint, you’re right on the money. But you also clearly haven’t tried Super Cruise before.

Honda is on a roll this year, with the brand’s U.S. sales growth expected to outpace the rest of the auto industry in 2024. That includes a 10-percent increase in repeat business, as well as an influx of returning customers who exited the market during the pandemic. Interestingly, the brand attributes some of its success to its EV partnership with General Motors.

All in all, Honda is expected to generate 1.2 million to 1.3 million new vehicle sales in the U.S. in 2024, up from 1.16 million units sold in 2023. Meanwhile, the automaker’s premium brand, Acura, is expected to stay flat at 150,000 units.

Ford recently turned to the agency to handle a campaign for its BlueCruise hands-free driving technology.
