Transportation technology services company EROAD Limited (NZX/ASX: ERD) (EROAD), with its purpose of safer and more sustainable roads, today announced that it has renewed its largest New Zealand Enterprise customer contracts, Downer EDI Limited (Downer).

The contract for 5,500 units extends through to December 2025.

BMW has made history as the first carmaker to integrate both Level 2 and Level 3 driving assistance systems in a single vehicle. The innovative combination of the BMW Highway Assistant and BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the new BMW 7 Series marks a significant milestone in automated driving technology.

Level 2: BMW Highway Assistant Enhances Long-Distance Comfort

The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 driving assistance feature, significantly enhances comfort on long journeys. Capable of operating at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph), this advanced system can be used on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. Drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods, provided they remain attentive and ready to retake control.

In addition, the Active Lane Change Assistant allows the vehicle to change lanes autonomously. The system performs the necessary steering movements for overtaking and adjusts the vehicle’s speed as required. Drivers can initiate a lane change suggested by the system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

BMW received approval for a combination of a Level 2 driving assistance system (the BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system in the form of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the same vehicle. The optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 is available exclusively in Germany priced at €6,000 (incl. VAT).

Drivers of cars equipped with the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 that have already been delivered will be able to add the BMW Highway Assistant to its range of functions free of charge from 08/24.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2). This Level 2 feature enhances comfort on long-distance journeys especially due to its ability to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The BMW Highway Assistant is an additional function of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant that can be used on motorways with structurally separated carriageways.

On such stretches of road, the driver is able to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods and position them comfortably, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time.

While driving in partially automated mode, the BMW 7 Series Sedan is also able to make lane changes without the driver having to take hold of the steering wheel again. This is made possible by the Active Lane Change Assistant, which performs the necessary steering movements for the overtaking manoeuvre and adjusts the vehicle’s speed as required as soon as the traffic situation permits. Plus, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

>BMW Personal Pilot (Level 3). Highly automated Level 3 driving means drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel and temporarily turn their attention away from the road. The BMW Personal Pilot L3 feature in the 7 Series enables drivers to delegate the task of driving fully to their car under certain conditions at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) and look away from the road.

Highly automated systems are capable of completely taking over the driving in specific situations, e.g. in traffic jams on the motorway. This even lets drivers carry out other in-car activities, such as making phone calls, reading, writing messages, working or streaming videos. However, the driver must always be prepared to reassume control within a few seconds when prompted by the car, for example when there are roadworks.

Spartanburg, USA. Celebrating 30 years of production, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA, has opened its state-of-the-art press shop, as it prepares for the launch of the new BMW X3. The X3’s outer skin, including its exterior body sides, doors, side panels and tailgate, will all be produced by the plant's own press shop.

Speaking in Spartanburg, Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, underlined the plant’s importance for the company and highlighted future opportunities: “After 30 years of successful production, we are further expanding our commitment. In late 2026, production of fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicles will get underway here in Spartanburg – a further step towards strengthening our global resilience.”

Between now and 2030, at least six fully-electric models will ramp up at the US plant. The high-voltage batteries for future BEVs from Spartanburg will come from nearby Woodruff, where the BMW Group is currently setting up an assembly for sixth-generation batteries. The innovative new press shop also contributes to strengthening the local manufacturing footprint in the US.

“The advanced production methods used in our press shop will ensure the highest quality and efficiency of body components for our customers,” said Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing. “Having this press shop on-site fits our ‘local for local’ strategy, whereby we produce major parts at the location where we need them.”

The BMW Group has invested more than $200 million to construct the roughly 20,000-square-metre press shop. It took just under two years from site work preparation to stamping the first parts on the press line. The investment has also led to the creation of more than 200 new jobs in various fields, including tool and die technicians, as well as in electrical and mechanical maintenance for automated machinery. Dozens of associates from Plant Spartanburg trained at the BMW Group press shops in Swindon in the UK and Leipzig in Germany.

During the ceremony, the fourth-generation BMW X3 was also presented to the audience. The BMW X3 is one of the company’s best-selling vehicles in the United States and worldwide. Plant Spartanburg associates have built more than 1.7 million BMW X3s since the model was introduced back in 2010. The new BMW X3 will be released onto the market in autumn 2024.

Software-defined vehicles (SDVs) are revolutionizing the driving experience. The trifecta of autonomous driving with connected car capabilities and over-the-air (OTA) updates enhance vehicles' operability and functionality. How can OEMs and suppliers capitalize? More importantly, what role will they play in autonomous driving?

Automakers have offered relatively simple Level 2 systems for more than a decade, but it was the advent of Level 2+ that really moved the industry from ADAS to Automated Driving. By integrating advanced sensors and vehicle software into a more holistic system design, L2+ vehicles from Tesla to Cadillac could achieve new functionality combining steering and acceleration and more—but this partial automation still requires the driver to remain engaged. Today, BMW, Mercedes, and more are joined by a host of tech-forward Chinese brands from NIO to Huawei that are actively developing Level 3 automated vehicles to manage more complex driving scenarios and to relieve the driver of constant supervision.

Tech giants like Alphabet's Google and Amazon are backing innovative startups such as Waymo and Zoox to push the boundaries of Level 4 autonomy. At this level, vehicles are fully autonomous and operate independently in geofenced areas. They integrate advanced software—evolving from machine learning algorithms to full stack training using Large Visual Models—with the latest sensor technologies to navigate without human input. The industry envisions a future where cars are not just vehicles but sophisticated mobility solutions—for instance, driverless robo-taxis navigating city streets and transporting passengers without human intervention.

Across the industry, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are rapidly developing in both safety and driving efficiency. System capabilities like hands-free driving with the support of Driver Facial Monitoring systems are increasingly sophisticated. Tesla, a leader in this field, has improved its software to handle dense urban driving and intersections as well as more traditional highway cruising functions that are the early focus of other automakers.

the 2024 model refresh cycle continues apace at bmw group, now the latest reveal is the new fourth-generation x3 #suv, shown in the image top left and featuring the distinctive curved display. shown bottom left is the third-generation x3, which has been in production since 2017 and is being phased out. as with other bmw models, the latest generation x3 dms is assessed to be from seeing machines, replacing the previous system from smart eye.

bmw has standardized on #dms integration within the instrument cluster, and is assumed to be using a #****pit #domain #controller running operating system 8/8.5/9 on the third-generation qualcomm ****pit #applicationsprocessor.

on the right side of the image below are first quarter 2024 production volumes of bmw models sourced from bmw blog. in first quarter alone bmw produced more than 530,000 vehicles. bmw is in a race with volkswagen group for which #automaker has the most vehicles in production with a #driver #monitoring #system in 2024.

added together, the assumption is just the bmw and vw programs will lead to dms deliveries exceeding 1 million units per quarter within the next twelve months. after many years of delays and frustration, 2024 will be the year dms deliveries finally exceed ten million units.

About time Mercedes stepped up…

Set to be offered as an option on the third-generation CLA sedan launching in North America in 2025, it is conceived to provide hands-off point-to-point autonomous driving capability through traffic-clogged city streets and faster-flowing urban roads.

The proprietary system, which operates without the aid of high-definition mapping and lidar-based sensors, will be made available on all upcoming Mercedes-Benz models based on the MMA platform – a hybrid structure underpinning both future gasoline and all-electric versions.

An extension of Mercedes-Benz’s existing Drive Pilot system, it relies on a combination of ultra-sonic sensors, cameras and both short- and long-range radar units together with an in-house-developed software package with artificial intelligence support and a neural map network – all operating on a Nvidia OrinX Snap Dragon chipset.

It’s not completely driverless; the driver still must remain alert and occasionally take control of the steering wheel when a combination of acoustic and visual warnings sound. However, it is programmed to autonomously accelerate, brake and steer the car along routes chosen by the satellite navigation.

The operation of the new Level 2++ system was revealed exclusively to WardsAuto during a recent visit to Mercedes-Benz’s research center in Beijing, where its final development is currently taking place on a fleet of S-Class prototypes ahead of its planned inclusion as an option on the CLA sedan next year."

At the annual Stellantis Investor Day, the automotive giant previewed three new technology platforms powered by artificial intelligence. These platforms will be shared across its four global brands. stla autodrive is the company's new hands-free driver-assist system. stellantis said the system will feature both hands-free eyes-on-the-road and hands-free eyes-off-the-road functionality, making it a level 3 driver-assist system.

to date, the only level 3 hands-off eyes-off hands-free driver assist system on sale in the u.s. is mercedes-benz's drivepilot. it's only available in specific eqs and s-class models in two states. gm's super cruise and ford's bluecruise systems are considered level 2 hands-off driver assist systems, and both require the driver to watch the road.

stellantis didn't provide any technical information on how stla autodrive works, where it works, how much it will cost, when or where the system will enable hands-off and eyes-off operation versus hands-off eyes-on operation, or the system's features. it's unknown which current and future vehicles will feature the system.

stellantis quietly launched its rival to super cruise and bluecruise called hands-free active driving assist late in 2023. the system debuted without fanfare on the 2024 jeep grand cherokee and just became available in the 2025 ram 1500. stellantis has still not released a map showing which roads the map-driven system will and won't work on, leaving consumers in the dark while ponying up for a $2,995 purchase.

a stellantis spokesperson told motor authority, "hands-free active assist technology will continue to be available for a period of time as we rollout the stla autodrive platform, an overlap that is typical of the launch of new technologies."

stellantis hasn't said how long hands-free active driving-assist will be supported or what will happen to the system in the long-term. stla autodrive will be ready for production at the end of 2024 and arrive in cars in 2025.

The start of regular production (SORP) for the 2025 model year was initially scheduled for June 3rd, 2024. However, that date has been moved back to June 24th, according to GM Authority sources. Once again, this new date is tentative and could change again between now and then.

Notably, the order books are already open for the 2025 GMC Hummer EV. The lineup once again consists of 2X and 3X trim levels, as the planned 2 or EV2 trim level never made it to production, and has been officially canned. Also gone is the SUV’s Edition 1 package, which was available during the 2024 model year.

Super cruise standard on all models aswell

The Ford F-150 has long held the title of being America’s best-selling vehicle alongside its Ford F-Series counterpart, the Ford Super Duty. However, even though it’s only sold in a select number of global markets, the Ford F-150 also moves in a high enough volume in the U.S. that is also ranks as one of the world’s best-selling vehicles, too. In 2022, the Ford F-150 ranked as the ninth best seller across the entire globe, and it once again made the cut in 2023 as well.
