It took a minute, but Stellantis finally got its advanced assisted driving features launched on the market with this year's Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L. Those models can be optioned with Hands-free Active Driving Assist, which works on vehicle-approved roads and at any speed, offering hands-off driving, lane centering, and predictive slowing for corners. This marked a step above Active Driving Assist, which is hands-on adaptive cruise control and lane centering that works up to 90 miles per hour. HFDA only works on approved roads, can change lanes after the driver taps the turn signal, and works up to 90 miles per hour.

With a fleet of over 150 trucks operating from distribution centres in Melbourne, Sydney, Wodonga and Brisbane, Don Watson Transport is one of Australia’s leading refrigerated transport companies.

The company had previously installed four way recording cameras to passively record the activities of their trucks.

Don Watson CEO Lyndon Watson says an incident with micro sleep prompted them to adopt permanent fatigue management technology across their fleet.

“We decided to roll it out, just immediately roll it out across every truck and every local truck and every rigid,” he says.

He says as a company, they must take every step to ensure a catastrophic event can be avoided.

“We have found that the active fatigue management tool that interacts with the driver in real time is an overall positive for the business.

“I’m sure that the technology is prompting drivers and reducing incidences that could have been something large.”

BMW starts next-gen M5 production

Notably, the seventh-gen version is the first M5 to come off the assembly line equipped with an electrified powertrain. Specifically, it is now powered by an “M Hybrid” system comprised of a twin-turbo V8 engine, a high-voltage battery, and an electric motor.

The all-new BMW M5 can generate up to 727 horsepower in total, allowing it to sprint from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.5 seconds. In addition to its punchy performance, the vehicle is likewise equipped with an electric-only mode. As per the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, the said mode can cover up to 69 kilometers.

BMW of North America today announced its sales results for the second quarter of 2024, highlighting a notable performance for both the BMW and MINI brands in the United States. In Q2 2024, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 91,237 vehicles, marking a 3.7% increase from the 87,948 vehicles sold in the same period last year. Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO of BMW of North America, acknowledged the industry-wide challenges but praised the resilience and resourcefulness of BMW dealers. “The past few weeks have been challenging for everyone in the industry; however, I’m pleased to report a positive result for the second quarter,” said Mackensen. “Our dealers have worked hard to manage the situation and set us up for a successful second half of the year.”

Tesla (hashtag#TSLA) has officially released its Q2 2024 delivery and production results.

The automaker confirmed having delivered 444,000 electric vehicles last quarter.

Wall Street has adjusted its expectation this quarter to a consensus of about 438,000 deliveries, which is down from the 466,000 vehicles hashtag#Tesla delivered during the same period in 2023.

Tesla’s stock is up 5% on the news.

The company's Q2 earnings call is scheduled for July 23 at 5:30 PM ET.

Toyota’s joint venture in China plans to launch a Level 3 autonomous driving battery-electric model in the market next year.

Reuters reports that the JV with state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) hopes to turn around the 22% in drop in demand for the Japanese automaker’s products during the first four months of 2024. It has been hit by increasing competition from cheaper Chinese products in the technologies of hybrid powertrains, batteries and automated driving features.

GAC Toyota says it will launch the Bozhi 3X SUV next year as the first model to be equipped with the system that claims the capability allow hands-free driving where regulations allow and for automated parking.

A new battlefield has emerged in the century-long tussle between General Motors and Ford: hands-free driving technology.

In recent testing of GM's Super Cruise in the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford's BlueCruise in the Ford F-150 Lightning, one thing became clear. GM is far ahead of Ford when it comes to limited hands-free driving, which is an evolution of adaptive cruise control.

However, as is always the case, these dates are subject to change at any time and for any reason.

At this time, it’s unclear what sort of updates the 2025 Lincoln Nautilus might bring about for the new model year, but given the fact that the crossover was redesigned from the ground up for 2024, it’s unlikely to be anything major. However, we can most likely expect to see the typical model year changeover updates such as exterior color changes and various other, minor tweaks.

All this power began rolling off the assembly line earlier this week with the start of production at the Dingolfing plant in Germany.

This plant has a long history with the M5, delivering the pre-assembled bodies for the first M5s way back in the 1980s. These were then completed by hand in Garching. Since the second generation in 1988, the M5 sedan has been built entirely at the Dingolfing plant in Lower Bavaria. The vehicle's main components are also produced on-site or supplied by nearby component plants.

Leipzig. The first fourth-generation BMW 1 Series to roll off the production line at BMW Group Plant Leipzig is a BMW 120 in Alpine White for a customer in Germany (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 - 5.3 l/100 km (62 miles); CO2 emissions combined: 135 - 121 g/km according to WLTP; CO2 classes: D). The premium compact is manufactured exclusively at Plant Leipzig, in Saxony, where up to 500 of the cars can be made per day. Combined with the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and MINI Countryman, this puts daily output from Plant Leipzig at up to 1,300 vehicles. The new BMW 1 Series is due for market launch in October 2024.

The new BMW 1 Series marks the start of a new chapter in the BMW brand’s almost 20-year success story in the compact segment. Production of the model first began with the three-door at Plant Leipzig in 2007. Since then the plant has manufactured more than 1.3 million in a range of variants. As at the end of June 2024, nearly 443,000 third-generation BMW 1 Series have been delivered to customers. “The new BMW 1 Series will remain a key factor in maintaining high capacity utilisation here at plant Leipzig,” said a confident Petra Peterhänsel, Plant Director.

Plant upgraded to increase capacity

Since 2018 BMW Group Plant Leipzig has undergone systematic upgrades. It can now produce up to 350,000 units a year – 100,000 more than previously. It currently manufactures four models with three different types of drive by two different brands – all on the same production line. Since November 2023 output has been boosted by the MINI Countryman. Production of that will rise during the course of this year to 500 units a day, in addition to the 800 or so BMW vehicles.

The increase in production volumes is securing existing jobs as well as creating new ones. An additional 900 people are set to join vehicle production alone, by the end of 2024 Plant Leipzig will employ around 7,000 people.

The assumption is VW will start integration of the occupant monitoring mirror with high volume model platforms, such as the Tiguan, Polo and Passat. The VW brand has fifteen models with annual production volumes exceeding 100,000 units; the Skoda brand has another five at this volume. With GSR coming into effect next month, the DMS integration plans for AUDI AG and Porsche AG are still unclear.

Earlier this week, Volkswagen of America, Inc unveiled the 2025 Jetta and Jetta GLI. Key features and highlights include:

- The standard Jetta will have a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder, eight-speed automatic, and exclusive front-wheel drivetrain (same as the 2024 Jetta).

- GLI models have a 2.0-liter turbo with 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. It’s available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual.

- The interior is characterized by a new three-bar upper dashboard design with a standard eight-inch touchscreen display and automatic climate control.

- Standard with the brand’s IQ.Drive system to enable Travel Assist, a semi-automated driving assistance feature.

- IQ.Drive utilizes front and rear radar, a front camera, and several ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area for the Travel Assist feature.

The first customer deliveries of the new VW Jetta and Jetta GLI will arrive in the third quarter of 2024. Expect a starting MSRP lower than the 2024 model at around $22,000 before destination charges.

We have started to install driver fatigue detection technology on 500 buses. Data from this project will help us to identify areas of greatest risk, such as locations, vehicles, routes, times of day and rosters. Where drivers are identified as being at risk, we will study operators’ interventions to find the most effective ways to combat driver fatigue. This supportive approach to intervention will work towards achieving an even stronger safety culture.

This joint TfL/TRL presentation will explore the outcomes from TfL’s fitment of fatigue detection technologies to 450+ buses and the implementation of best practice bus driver fatigue management processes across all eight London bus operators.

The findings from this 6 month before-after case control trial will provide insights into the effectiveness of fatigue detection technologies and fatigue management processes as a holistic approach for managing, and ultimately eliminating, bus driver fatigue incidents through the largest-scale trial of its kind in the world to date.

The presentation will aim to take the audience through the key learnings, both from the challenges associated with trial design/implementation and the outcomes of the trial evaluation.
