I’d really like to see Elon reconsider his position on driver monitoring in Tesla vehicles. With GM and now Ford moving to it, it’s starting to quickly become a trend in the industry. Pretty quickly it’ll feel outdated for Tesla drivers, to be required to hold the wheel, when competitors don’t.

When Full-Self Driving was going to be complete at the end of 2019, spending engineering resources on a temporary problem, did seem like a waste. Now FSD development is taking longer than expected, it’s probably time to rethink it.

Once FSD does arrive, it’ll definitely be far superior to both Supercruise and Ford’s Co-Pilot360, but there is a risk here that Tesla’s decision on driver monitoring starts to feel old, fast.

The big question about Tesla’s interior camera, does it have the resolution necessary to detect decreased blink rates, or would it be restricted to full head movements, like the driver falling asleep.

SWOV has written a report, commissioned by Shell Global Solutions International B.V., BP International Limited, Total S.A., and Chevron Services Company, provides a detailed comparison of around 100 such technologies and systems, with the overall aim to provide a recommendation on which devices to consider for further testing or use.

The results of the comparison suggest that there is not a single system that outperforms all other systems on all criteria. For optimal monitoring for fatigue and distraction, a combination of systems or system features may therefore be needed. Selection of a particular system will also depend on user preferences. Before selecting a specific device, it is recommended to compare a range of devices in real-world conditions. The findings suggest four systems to consider, depending on the number of devices one would want to compare.

At Tesla's Battery Day event last month, the automaker promised that an early version of its long-awaited "Full Self-Driving" system would be available in "a month or so." Now that a month or so has passed, a tweet from CEO Elon Musk makes it sound like everything's on track.

According to Elon Musk's Twitter account, a limited version of the Full Self-Driving upgrade of its Autopilot software will make its way to owners starting next Tuesday. Musk was quick to note that the FSD beta will "be limited to a small number of people who are expert [and] careful drivers." It's unclear just how Tesla will determine a driver's worthiness; Tesla does not operate a public relations department to field requests for comment.
