Dozens of safety-minded organizations launched a national coalition aimed at reducing the deadly threat of distracted driving on the nation’s highways.

The 100-member steering committee for the group, the National Distracted Driving Coalition, said on Sept. 16 that it is planning to act as a central clearinghouse for local and state safety groups. It will promote national, innovative and collaborative approaches to shed light on and pursue legislation on such distracted driving practices as talking and texting on cellphones.

International carmakers are partnering with Chinese companies to tailor autonomous driving solutions for their vehicles sold in the world's largest vehicle market.
Besides its partnership with Momenta, GM is developing autonomous driving technologies through its subsidiary Cruise.

Cruise's autonomous driving system, called Super Cruise, is already used in GM's Cadillac CT6 sold in China.

The carmaker said the system will be introduced into more vehicle models available in the country. China is the biggest market for GM. Last year, it sold around 3 million vehicles in the country.

Honda and GM, in a joint statement originally confirming the project in April 2020, also appeared to hint that the Honda Prologue might have a version of GM's Super Cruise assisted-driving tech. That will likely be the first time Super Cruise is offered on a vehicle from a non-GM brand.

Top-trim Expedition Platinum models already came with even more standard driver-assist gear in 2021, but for 2022 the Platinum gets another competitive boost. In an answer to GM’s SuperCruise, the poshest Expedition gets Blue Cruise, Ford’s similar system that enables hands-free driving on certain sections of divided highway called “blue zones.”

Blue Cruise also incorporates a driver monitoring system to make sure their eyes are on the road and their hands ready to take over in an emergency or when transitioning into a non-blue zone.

The system will be standard on the Platinum but available in some of the other Expedition trims. The hardware that makes it work will be included in every Expedition that comes with adaptive cruise control, but the system will be available by subscription. “The future will be subscription based,” said Ford SUV Program Director Bill Gubing in the Expedition Q&A.

American Honda Motor Co. has big plans for its first big-volume all-electric SUV that General Motors will help build and power.

On Monday, American Honda said in a statement that its initial annual sales target for the Prologue SUV EV is 70,000 units in the U.S. when the car goes on sale in 2024.
“Launching our first volume battery-electric vehicle in 2024 is the start of an exciting new direction for Honda,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations at American Honda, in a statement.

The automaker's initial approach to selling the Prologue will be regional, focusing on California and Sun Belt states of Texas and Florida. Honda anticipates these regions will represent the bulk of sales at the onset of launch due to higher customer acceptance of EVs and regulatory requirements.

As EV infrastructure grows and customer interest increases nationwide, Honda said it will expand sales and marketing efforts to other areas of the country.

“We are working with our dealers to plan the transition from sales of primarily gasoline-powered vehicles to selling 100% electric vehicles by 2040," Gardner said.

GM said earlier this year it aspires for its entire light-duty lineup to be zero-emissions by 2035.

Following the launch of Prologue, Honda plans to introduce more EVs based on its new e-Architecture now being developed and to grow sales to about 500,000 EVs by 2030, it said.
