Safety concerns will likely be the cornerstone of any future update to the ADS Guidelines. As the levels of automation increase and the public begins to adopt and rely on ADS in greater numbers, safety becomes a paramount consideration. For example, the ADS Guidelines require that:

“Safety drivers can intervene and assume manual control of the test vehicle in the event that the ADS does not function as intended or exceeds its ODD requiring assistance to achieve a minimal risk condition and/or continue its journey safely.”11

As trial organizations and developers begin to test and deploy ADS with greater levels of autonomy, regulators may require or recommend active safety systems that monitor the driver and conditions inside of the vehicle to ensure that an attentive human being is ready to takeover in the event the ADS does not function as intended. These driver monitoring systems could take the form of cameras inside the vehicle that are pointed at the driver or the driver’s eye line, breathing monitors to detect whether someone is sleeping, or other biometric systems designed to gauge the attentiveness of a human driver and if necessary, prompt a human driver to pay attention. Installation of these types of systems could create further cybersecurity and privacy risks that developers must safeguard against.

James Hodgson, industry analyst at ABI Research, argues that driver-monitoring technology will eventually become as common as seat belts. “Their growth will be very much tied to the growth of semi-autonomous vehicles,” he explains. James estimates that by 2026, there will be around 17.5m semi-autonomous and autonomous cars produced with this technology each year.

SAN FRANCISCO — For a few hours late last month, Tesla cars began behaving erratically after receiving an overnight software update. Cars suddenly started slamming on the brakes at highway speeds, owners reported, risking collisions. CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to acknowledge a problem with the software and vow that the update was being rolled back.

Ordinarily, that would have been the end of it for Musk, whose company has often flouted standard regulatory practices. But late last month, Tesla unexpectedly reported the glitch to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and issued an official recall notice detailing the problem, which affected as many as nearly 12,000 vehicles.

Tesla’s decision comes as the Biden administration has stepped up enforcement of federal safety regulations regarding advanced driver-assistance systems — particularly Tesla’s habit of issuing software fixes without reporting underlying problems. Last month, NHTSA publicly dinged Tesla for failing to issue a formal recall when it issued a separate software update to enable its cars to better see parked emergency vehicles in low light following around a dozen prior crashes involving parked emergency vehicles while Autopilot was activated.

The CT6 had 3yrs deal, most cars initially will be in the $70-120k region so people buying these want the new tech. Iam sure the take up will be high. By the time the 3yr deals run out legislation will kick in.

If the average lifespan of a car is 7yrs they will all be built with it in anyway. As they will get the 2nd or 3rd buyer of the vehicle anyway.

Cadillac’s global sales are up 18% this year over same-period 2020 and are on pace for the brand’s best sales year in its 119-year history, the brand’s global chief says. But U.S. Cadillac sales are down significantly from the brand’s heyday.

Cadillac is headed for its best year ever despite the shortage of semiconductors and despite lower U.S. sales, according to Rory Harvey, the General Motors vice president in charge of the brand around the world.

During a virtual briefing with reporters, Harvey declines to say how many reservations or firm orders it has for the initial batch of Cadillac’s first battery-electric vehicle, the Lyriq, but he says they sold out in 10 minutes. Production will be limited because Cadillac wants to make sure it can deliver the vehicles.

During a recent Q&A session with the media, Global Vice-President of Cadillac, Rory Harvey confirmed the automaker so far has around 216,000 “hand raisers,” for the Cadillac Lyriq. A “hand raiser,” by Cadillac’s definition, is someone who has registered interest in the vehicle at a dealer or through the automaker’s website by signing up to receive email updates.

“This is not a commitment to buy a vehicle,” Harvey said of the so-called hand raisers. “This is basically somebody that says ‘I’m interested in the Lyriq, I would like to get details on the Lyriq, I would like to be kept informed in terms of the Lyriq’, etc.”

Harvey went on to use the Cadillac Escalade as an example of how many hand raisers it typically converts to paying customers. He said that for the new Escalade, it observed around a “20 to 30 percent conversion rate on hand raisers.”

Harvey also said the brand would be happy with a 20 percent conversion rate on the Cadillac Lyriq – which would be slightly above its actual expectations for the vehicle, as many of these hand raisers are simply curious about the vehicle due to it being the first battery-electric Cadillac product.

“We don’t necessarily have data in terms of, is this going to hit our historical conversion rates that we get on ICE, or isn’t it,” he said. “Let’s just say for example that it’s 20 percent. If we get a 20 percent conversion rate, that means there are 40,000 [buyers]. I personally think it’ll be slightly less than that, because I think there are a lot of people that are speculating at the moment.”

Why wouldn't you want the best as an OEM? Will Qualcomm let others use Snapdragon without their own DMs thats tried and tested?

As ever a guessing game but the more OEMs Qualcomm into will ultimately lead to more conversions iam sure.

Qualcomm are big in Auto now and iam hoping we learn alot more at the 16th Nov Investor presentation. After sewing up mobile phones Iam sure Automotive may follow the same :)

This year has thus far proven to be a rough ride for the “self-driving” industry. Tesla and Elon Musk have lost interest in developing a network of robo-taxis, instead shifting focus to the “Tesla Bot” while Waymo’s robo-taxi was bamboozled by a single static traffic cone.

By contrast, there is heightened awareness of the potential for advanced driver monitoring to reduce fatalities. One indication is a provision for driver monitoring systems (DMS) and other safety technology such as automatic emergency braking and crash avoidance systems included in pending U.S. infrastructure legislation.

Having studied the automotive DMS market since 2017, I have observed a recent and radical shift in sentiment towards safety technology. This responds primarily to growing recognition that passenger vehicles won’t offer any form of “self-driving” functionality any time soon.
Production starts

Seeing Machines supplies its DMS software to GM for Super Cruise as well as to Mercedes Benz for the new S-Class and EQS. Research suggests it will also achieve a start of production (SOP) this year with BMW, Ford and Jeep. Smart Eye has reached SoP with BMW and Hyundai-Kia; Cipia is set to start production this year with GM. Additional details are here.

Aisin, Jungo and Mitsubishi are among the only other DMS providers reaching SOP, but all three are significantly behind the market leaders in terms of advanced technology development. They will likely fall further behind.

Automakers typically look for technology partners with at least a decade of automotive R&D. Only Seeing Machines and Smart Eye fulfill that requirement for automotive DMS software. While Aisin and Mitsubishi are both established automotive suppliers, their DMS performance is considerably behind the state-of-the-art. For example, neither offers robust eye-gaze tracking.

Established eye-tracking companies such as Tobii lack automotive-specific expertise, creating significant headwind over the next five years.

Seeing Machines recently announced it is working with 16 leading suppliers. They likely include Aptiv, Bosch, Continental, Denso, Garmin, Gentex, Harman, Joyson, LG Electronics, Magna, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Valeo, Veoneer, Visteon and ZF.

In its latest financial results, Smart Eye provided few details, but I reckon it is working with as many as eight suppliers, including Aptiv and multiple Chinese companies. Similarly, Cipia is likely working with Aptiv and Jabil as well as a number of Chinese companies.
