The National Transport Commission today welcomes industry stakeholders to an important
workshop discussion on the work and rest hours for heavy vehicle drivers across Australia.
Driver fatigue is one of the top three contributors to the road toll and is associated with an
increased risk of crashing and road trauma.
As part of the Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety and Productivity Program, the NTC is
drawing on scientific and safety evidence and operational insights in Australia and
internationally to inform a best practice approach to managing driver fatigue.
“Today’s workshop is an opportunity to share the best practice research and to factor in local
conditions by listening to the many voices and experience across industry,” said Dr Gillian
Miles, NTC Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner. “It would be remiss of us not to fully
understand the practical impacts of applying the science and research, because we need to
get the balance right and make this work for Australia.”

The Super Cruise Performance Integration Team (PIT) Lead is the global leader for a cross organizational team responsible for in vehicle development, calibration and performance of the Super Cruise driver communication and monitoring systems. This is a team made up of software, integration, calibration, test and release engineers and suppliers. A string of legacy carmakers, lead by BMW, will look to leapfrog Tesla’s “full self-driving” system next year by into Level 3 autonomous driving technology.

While Tesla is free to call its technology “full-self driving,” it’s a form of driver-assistance technology, which is meant to increase driver safety with systems like automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring. But the driver must always be supervising the support features.

Level 3 features go beyond providing support and can drive the car under limited conditions, according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The caveat that the driver must take over if the vehicle requests still exists, unlike Level 4 and 5.

BMW’s Level 3 campaign will start its 2022 7 Series full-size sedan, which is due in North America in the second half of 2022. “Level 3 you will see from us in the 7 Series next year,” said BMW’s Director of Development Frank Weber. “It’s a function you can buy. It will be ready to go at the launch of the 7 Series.”

The higher-volume 5 Series midsize sedan and, eventually, the X5 and X7 SUVs also are slated to receive the technology, Weber said. An optional upgrade to Level 3 technology also will be available for its just-launched iX electric SUV.

“The technology stack [for the iX] is a Level 3 system,” Weber said. BMW regards a “stack” as a combination of hardware and software, right down to a computer that processes data 20 times faster than current production BMWs and input from partner Mobileye, a supplier of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) software, which is owned by tech giant Intel.

Mazda Motor Corp. plans to release a car in 2022 featuring technology that can safely bring the vehicle to a stop on the roadside and make an emergency call if the driver falls asleep or becomes incapacitated.

The Mazda Co-Pilot system will be able to detect when it needs to intervene judging from the driver’s posture and line of sight.

The vehicle will automatically honk the horn and flash its indicators if the driver has lost control, according to the automaker, while taking over and bringing the car to a safe stop.

Mazda unveiled the concept for its Co-Pilot system in June. The automaker revealed Thursday that a model equipped with the driver monitoring system and also able to change lanes automatically on an expressway will be launched in 2025 or thereafter.

“We aim (for the car) to protect (the driver) and ensure safety like, an aircraft’s co-pilot,” said Takahiro Tochioka, who is responsible for the system’s development.

The company is unique in the industry because a large chunk of its profit comes from technology licensing. Makers of phones pay to use Qualcomm’s technology, regardless of whether they buy its chips, because the company owns patents that cover some of the fundamentals of mobile communications.

Chief executive officer Cristiano Amon has diversified Qualcomm’s suppliers to ensure the company can get what it needs. He also has been working to lower a dependency on mobile-phone chips by selling semiconductors to automakers and other manufacturers.

Now, however, the ascension of Cliff to head the agency is being seen by most observers as an indicator that the NHTSA will take a more active role in driving road safety improvements. It also seems likely that the agency will begin making new rules governing the development and use of autonomous vehicles considering models equipped with level 2 semi-autonomous systems are becoming more common on US roads.

Further evidence that autonomous vehicles are in the NHTSA’s sights can be seen with the appointment of Missy Cummings as a senior safety adviser. Cummings is a professor of engineering and computer science at Duke University – and former fighter pilot – with extensive experience of autonomous driving systems and has been openly critical of autonomous systems including Tesla’s Autopilot through her online presence. Cummings’ appointment in particular appears to have irked Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk who tweeted that Cummings track record is “extremely biased against Tesla”.

Musk’s concern over Cummings’ role appears to be driven by a concern that she will guide legislation that will impact Tesla – specifically in relation to its Autopilot and Full Self Driving semi-autonomous systems. This comes on top of the August 2021 announcement that the NHTSA would formally investigate the safety of Tesla’s Autopilot system after reviewing a number of cases where vehicles that were reportedly using the system collided with emergency vehicles.

Already, Tesla’s army of vocal supporters have criticized the decision to employ Cliff and Cummings. Among their points of contention are that Cummings herself was, until recently, a board member for Veoneer – Autoliv’s ADAS and autonomous driving spin-off recently acquired by chip designer Qualcomm. Veoneer offers a range of ADAS and AV-related products including LiDAR sensors (light detection and ranging), which Tesla’s CEO has openly mocked as a ‘fool’s errand’, saying they

Driver sleep warning system Antison has received an award acknowledging it as one of the “most significant innovative and socially-oriented projects in Russia.”

The system received the IT Stars Annual Russian award recognizing it as one of the leading IT developments in Russia. Antison also won the RusBase Digital Award for logistics earlier this year.

Antison scans the faces of drivers, monitors their blinking frequency, and sends the information to dispatch centers. It uses computer vision to identify when drivers are falling asleep, smoking or using their mobile phones. The driver monitoring system has been implemented on 95% of buses in Moscow.

The aim of the system is to improve road safety. According to the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow, last year the number of public surface transport accidents decreased by almost 30% thanks to the system, and it helped prevent more than 11,000 road accidents.

It’s no secret that Level 2 advanced driver-assist technology is going to be introduced on a number of new automotive models in the coming years. Ford is currently working on developing its BlueCruise and ActiveGlide hands-free highway driving features, though the automaker recently delayed the launch of that tech from late 2021 to the first quarter of 2022. In the meantime, the Ford Kuga – a rebadged Ford Escape sold globally – has gained the automaker’s CoPilot360 level 2 advanced driver-assist technology in Taiwan.

In addition to this new driver-assist tech, the Ford Kuga Lv2 also now comes equipped with the RED Road Edge Detection system, as well as Ford’s ACC Stop & Go full-speed cruise control system (with low-speed follow-up) combined with the LCA lane guidance assist function, which helps it meet the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) requirements for level 2 autonomous technology.

The fact that Ford is offering level 2 driver-assist technology on the Kuga in Taiwan suggests that it’s possible BlueCruise could debut on the Escape at some point in the future, most likely when the crossover receives its forthcoming refresh for the 2023 model year ahead of a more comprehensive redesign in 2025.

We were able to continuously monitor oculometrics throughout the drive, using Seeing Machines’ driver monitoring system (DMS; Seeing Machines, Canberra, Australia), a technology used in other naturalistic driving studies50,51. We also had strict eligibility criteria to ensure that those with health conditions that might impact sleep, such as sleep apnoea, were excluded from the study, ensuring any impairment was a direct result from sleep loss. The $150 billion in market cap Company submitted a bid to acquire Veoneer Inc. which will strengthen its stance in the emerging markets of driver assistance technology which puts an even brighter outlook ahead for the company whose estimated Earnings per share for the full year is expected to come in at $8.25 which is a massive 96.90% growth y/y and tops all yearly earnings since 2015 – by quite a margin as well. Revenue for the full year is expected at $33.04 billion, up from $23.53 billion y/y (40.40%), with the revenue outlook even better for next year.

In order to prevent critical driving situations and possible accidents, Kumtor Gold Company CJSC is rolling out a system for monitoring of attention and fatigue in drivers and heavy-duty equipment operators. After all, drowsiness, decreased concentration, not wearing a seat belt can have negative consequences.

Recently, Kumtor has updated its fleet of mining equipment. As part of the pilot project, automatic driver fatigue monitoring systems from different manufacturing companies were installed on four vehicles. A special camera analyzes many parameters on the face: the direction of gaze, the frequency and duration of blinking, the presence of yawns. If the system notices signs of fatigue and distraction from the road in a person, it will give the driver a special sound signal. In addition, data from the device is immediately sent to the dispatcher, while all information is grouped and analyzed, helping in the future when drawing up work schedules.

“This is a very necessary innovation. Situations can be very different. Sometimes while driving you can suddenly feel sleepy. In moments like this, such a signal is necessary,” Kassymbek Bayamanov, operator of the Caterpillar haul truck, shares his impressions of the device being tested.

It recognizes and captures the operator’s face, after which it already reacts to his actions, his distractions.
