Magna Tells Investors Sales Expected to Jump More Than $11B by 2023

Magna International, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers expects global sales to hit as much as $45.5 billion in 2023, officials told investors this week.

The company said it expects sales to grow to a range of $43 billion to $45.5 billion in 2023, up from $32.6 billion in 2020. Officials expect global light-vehicle production to grow 6% on average per year from 2020 through 2023, while the company’s annual sales will grow 10-12% on average, per year over that time frame, the annual report indicated.

Eye-gaze tracking

Early direct driver monitoring systems such as GM SuperCruise in the Cadillac CT6 assessed head pose orientation but lacked the ability to track a driver’s eye gaze. Euro NCAP’s DMS test protocols will require eye-gaze tracking:

“The movement of a driver’s head and eyes is also important. For glances that are a smaller visual angle from the forward roadway drivers typically will engage in what is termed “lizard” glance behavior. Here the drivers’ eyes are moving but the head is relatively still. Someone recently asked me for recommendations. He wants a car, but doesn’t want to spend too large on it. That’s because he plans to sell it in five years, to buy one of the self-driving autonomous cars he expects will be available by then.

Never mind five years; I’m doubtful a truly autonomous car will be here within his lifetime. Vehicles already contain some of the technology necessary for autonomy, and development moves at a swift pace, but many don’t realize the scope of all that’s needed before we can ditch the steering wheel altogether – or even just most of the time.
There’s no question that automation is coming; it’s far enough along that there’s no stopping it now. But there’s so much more technology needed, and far more hurdles than many people realize. Keep on practicing your driving skills, because you’re still going to need them for a long time to come.
