No hands, feet or focused eyes required
What stands out about Luminar’s third-generation Iris lidar sensing system is that the vehicle doesn’t require any driver input or attention. The long-range lidar system provides Level 3 hands-free driving on designated highway sections. Drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel, take their feet off the pedals, and take their eyes and attention elsewhere, like answering emails or watching a movie. Luminar developed its own hardware and software and created the iris sensing platform at a significantly reduced cost. Luminar will begin manufacturing its third-generation iris lidar system in late 2022, Russell said.
Working with the automaker, Luminar created a smaller, sleeker hardware package that sits almost flush with the roof so it doesn’t spoil the aesthetic. One advantage of the high position, Jellicoe says, is a better view of the road ahead, and you don’t get as much salt and dirt as you would with putting it in the grille. It’s also less likely to be damaged in a crash.
Systems like Tesla’s Autopilot or GM’s Super Cruise require the driver’s attention — GM monitors the driver’s eyes — to ensure the driver is in control when needed. They are considered Level 2 on the Autopilot scale, and the systems are designed to deactivate when hands are taken off the wheel for too long or eyes are moved.
