Six former transport ministers have urged Transport Secretary Grant Shapps to swiftly adopt new vehicle safety standards.
New vehicle safety standards become mandatory in the European Union and Northern Ireland from July but will not automatically be used in Britain.

A package of 15 measures becomes mandatory in the European Union and Northern Ireland from July but will not automatically apply in Britain due to Brexit.

The changes include advanced emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists, intelligent speed adaptation which discourages or prevents speeding, and systems to help drivers reverse safely.

The cross-party former transport ministers who signed a letter calling on Mr Shapps to implement the standards – which have been heralded as the biggest advance in vehicle safety since the seat belt – were Sir Peter Bottomley, Baroness Hayman, Lord Whitty, Jim Fitzpatrick, Paul Clark and Norman Baker.

Adopting the package in its entirety is “the single most important thing you can do now to reduce deaths and injuries on UK roads” and could be done “at virtually no cost to taxpayers”, they wrote.

As Ford Motor Co. approaches first deliveries of its all electric F-150 Lightning this spring, it has shared new details regarding how future owners will soon be able to power their homes using the truck as a backup generator. Through a new partnership with Sunrun, F-150 Lightning customers will soon have a number of energy management solutions at their disposal through Ford or existing equipment.

In addition to pivoting away from internal combustion, The Blue Oval is in the early stages of introducing an advanced driver assistance system in the form of Ford BlueCruise, which will allow owners to let their vehicles take over driving on select U.S. highways and roads, provided they are paying attention. To counter the inevitability that motorists would let their eyes wander away from what lies ahead of their windshield, Ford decided to install an infrared camera on all Ford BlueCruise equipped vehicles, something that key rivals decided against. That choice has seemingly resulted in those systems being unable to adequately monitor driver inattention, according to a new study from AAA. The study ultimately found that vehicles with infrared cameras were better able to monitor their drivers, although they did slip up from time to time.

WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) will recall 53,822 U.S. vehicles with the company's Full Self-Driving (Beta) software that may allow some models to conduct "rolling stops" and not come to a complete stop at some intersections posing a safety risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall covers some 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. NHTSA said the feature also known as FSD Beta may allow vehicles to travel through an all-way stop intersection without first coming to a stop.

Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update that disables the "rolling stop" functionality, NHTSA said. Tesla did not immediately respond to a rquest comment.

Automakers should avoid creating closed software operating systems for their cars or face increased costs, a senior executive with chip supplier Qualcomm said.
Closed versus open operating systems is a key debate in the automotive world as manufacturers rush to develop new interfaces and connectivity to put their cars more on par with the smartphone industry.

"We do not support the vertical model where a player is doing whatever he does, but not making it available to anyone else," Enrico Salvatori, head of Qualcomm Europe, said in an interview with Automotive News Europe.

The closed, or vertical model, is more costly than an open or horizontal system that uses common elements on the hardware and software, Salvatori said. "It can create economies of scale and that reduces the bill of materials, thanks to the volume," he added.

BMW last year spoke out against automakers using closed systems. "It's a mistake when everyone develops their own operating system, that is a dead end," BMW head of development Frank Weber told Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung in September.

Weber said closed systems risk "endangering the proven supplier networks in Germany, Europe and beyond," he added as compatibility is lost.

Tesla is the most obvious example of an automaker using a largely closed operating system as part of wider philosophy of vertical integration at the company.
Others such as Chinese company Nio are looking to follow the automaker's route, which is analogous to Apple's closed operating system in the world of mobile devices such as smartphones.

Qualcomm has benefited from the more open system of smartphones away from the Apple and its operating system. The chip supplier is working with automakers and Tier 1 suppliers such as Harman, Bosch and Continental to integrate its Snapdragon Digital ****pit Platform that uses a powerful chip to control both connectivity and the 'digital ****pit' network of information screens.

The third-generation system is fitted to the new Opel Astra and Peugeot 308 compact hatchback, as well as the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric.

The U.S.-based company also signed an agreement with Renault to collaborate on the integration of Qualcomm's Digital Chassis system, with adds advanced driving technology within its domain.

Qualcomm uses a 'hypervisor' to allow its software to talk to differing operating systems. "We want to have an open hardware platform that is able to support many OS environments, many software ecosystems," Salvatori said.

Continental also spoken out for the need for a common platform that frees up automakers to design the differentiating elements that customers will see.

"More than half of the software content in a software-defined car is not going to be differentiated. It's going to be basically what's under the hood," Michael Huelsewies, head of architecture and software at Continental, said in an interview last year.

This video of Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley and Mobileye's Amnon Shashua mentions the next generation of Ford's #BlueCruise supervised automation system, with performance enhancements provided by Mobileye's REM maps. First generation BlueCruise used Mobileye #EyeQ4, with Seeing Machines #DMS software running on the #Fovio processor, and Veoneer as tier one supplier.

Based on announcements at #CES2022, BlueCruise-2 is likely to use Mobileye's new #EyeQ6Light #SoC, which is set for volume production starting in 2023. Mobileye has declared it has committed deals for EyeQ6Light of over 9 million units. In its history, Mobileye has shipped about 100 million EyeQ chips in total, so EyeQ6Light will be critical for Mobileye's continued success in mass-market designs.

Ford is judged to have the most advanced DMS processor in a series-production vehicle today, and Consumer Reports recently concluded: "Driver Monitoring Systems by Ford and General Motors Are Only Ones to Earn Points in CR's Tests." Ford is almost certainly the first automaker into production with the Seeing Machines #Occula #NPU.

The working assumption is that BlueCruise-2 will use EyeQ6Light, and a Fovio processor running Occula Release 8.2 to provide state-of-the-art driver monitoring functions. With the Mobileye portion of the design announced in the public domain at CES, it therefore follows that a Ford design-win for DMS must be imminent.

It's hard to believe sedans and passenger cars in general were once big business in the US. A massive shift has been underway for years now as buyers opt for more utility, cargo space and high-riding machines. In other words, pickup trucks and SUVs. The latest data forecast from J.D. Power, released on Wednesday, shows the passenger car market has shrunk to new lows.

According to the forecast, 80.1% of all new vehicles sold in January 2022 will be either pickup trucks or SUVs. That leaves just under 20% of sales this month for passenger cars like the Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and the like. Instead, Americans are all-in on utility vehicles. Those of you that did opt for a sedan, you're part of an ever-shrinking club.
