The All-Electric GMC Hummer Drives Like a 9,000-Pound Sports Car30 May 2022 18:22
Should be a great seller...
The General Motors GM +3.07% all-electric GMC Hummer is a 9,000-pound sports car.
Barron’s drove one on the streets, highways—and parking lots—of Detroit. The experience was thrilling and, frankly, a little crazy. A vehicle the size of a small tank with 35-inch tires—about the height of an average three year old—just shouldn’t be that smooth, quick, or comfortable.
The configuration we drove was a 1,000 horsepower behemoth. Acceleration on highways was fast enough to induce butterflies. That acceleration was in a regular driving mode. There is a “Watts to Freedom” driving mode that frees up more battery power and propels the Hummer from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 3 seconds.
Our highway driving allowed us to test out Super Cruise, GM’s (ticker: GM) hands free advanced driver assistance feature. The best part was the truly hands free nature of the system. We have driven other EVs, and traditional vehicles, with new driver assistance features. Many require a driver to provide a little turning force on the steering wheel to keep the system on. The force proves drivers are still engaged.
Super Cruise uses an interior camera to monitor a driver’s eye position and attentiveness. It is another approach to ensuring current driver assistance features are supervised by drivers appropriately. We prefer the camera to the steering wheel modality.
