Demand for driving safety monitoring chips on track to grow fast26 Sep 2022 22:14
Chip demand for driving safety is poised to enter a period of rapid growth as many countries are introducing regulations requiring installation of related safety systems, including driver monitoring systems (DMS), in new vehicles, according to industry sources.
Regulations often bring restrictions to industry players, but in the field of automotive electronics, shipments for many new applications are being stoked by policy requirements, especially those associated with driving safety, the sources said.
ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) is expected to be further extended to general vehicles, and DMS (driver monitoring system) will also join the next wave of rapidly growing new applications, the sources continued.
Many research institutions have reported that demand for in-vehicle lens modules has entered a rapid growth period since the start of 2022 and may double in the next three years, with DMS as a new application to see the fastest penetration rate in the years ahead.
Industry sources pointed out that to further ensure driving safety in Europe, their latest regulations clearly stipulate that DMS will become a standard requirement for new vehicles in 2025-2026. This means that each vehicle must be fitted with at least one lens module in the driver seat, and therefore many carmakers are actively looking for suitable devices to carry out tests and designs.
