DETROIT — Ford Motor is extending the availability of its hands-free highway driving system to Lincoln’s entry-level Corsair crossover, as the automaker expands the technology to lower-cost vehicles.

The 2023 Corsair will be the sixth vehicle in Ford’s lineup to offer the system and only the second Lincoln model, following the brand’s flagship Navigator SUV. As the system expands – branded as ActiveGlide for Lincoln and BlueCruise for Ford – the Corsair will be the company’s least expensive vehicle to offer the technology.

Pricing for the Corsair will be around $40,000 to $55,000, which includes a plug-in hybrid electric model. Ordering for the crossover is now open, with vehicles expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms in early 2023.

Back in May, GM officially announced that it will offer Super Cruise on the 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban. However, shortly thereafter, the advanced, semi-autonomous driver assistant became unavailable to order as a result of a constraint, until now.

GM Authority has learned that Super Cruise is now available to order on both the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban. The feature is currently exclusive to the Premier and High Country trim levels.

But this truck isn’t designed to be an entirely driverless one. The truck’s infrared driver-monitoring camera watches for eye and head position. You can glance at a passenger or consult a navigation screen — but if you look away for more than a few seconds, LEDs illuminate blue on the steering wheel rim, a transparent command to get your eyes back on the road. If you ignore prompts, the rim flashes red, and the system disengages and reverts to hands-on control.

Ford (F) Sets Up Independent Subsidiary for China EV Business

Ford Motor F is putting in zealous efforts to rev up its electrification progress. In a landmark announcement via the media recently, it has set up a new subsidiary, Ford Electric Mach Technologies or FMeT, dedicated solely to the research and developmen, and operation of intelligent electric vehicles (EVs) in China. The company has already made a notable footprint in the U.S. EV space, and the latest development will boost its China's electrification strategy.

FMeT will be a first-of-kind EV-dedicated entity set up by a foreign automaker in China. The company currently sells three EV models in the country, including its signature Mustang Mach-E crossover, which recorded deliveries of 3,576 in the first half of this year.

Per the media report, the integrated R&D system will include an electrification center, a digital experience center and an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) center. The digital experience center will focus on advanced ****pit and mobile connectivity solutions for Chinese customers. The ADAS center will leverage the BlueOval intelligent technology stack resource and partner with local companies for local road and traffic data. This will ensure a speedy deployment of Ford’s BlueCruise ADAS feature in the country.

Through its high-end intelligent EV-focused brand, Ford Select, the automaker has developed an independent direct sales network for premium EVs in China. Ford Select currently has 106 sales outlets in 43 cities in the country. Ford Select’s first flagship store will be opened by the end of the year. FMeT will adopt a direct sales model through this network instead of selling through dealerships. This will allow better brand penetration.

Global plugin vehicle registrations were up 60% in August 2022 compared to August 2021, reaching 847,000 units. This is the best result ever for an off-peak month (as in, not the final month of a quarter). So, expect not only that Q3 will be the best quarter ever for plugins, but also that September will provide the mother of all record months! I expect September will be the first time the world reaches one million plugin vehicle registrations in a month. With China (surely), the USA (likely), and Europe (maybe?) posting record months in September, expect the end of Q3 to be another time of celebration.

With a strong month in August, plugins represented 15% share of the overall auto market. Full electrics (BEVs) themselves reached 11% share of the market! And these numbers could have been even larger of the overall market had not started to recover last month. That, added to the fact that plugless hybrids (HEVs) posted their highest growth rate since last March (+6% YoY), confirms once again the significant correlation between the HEV and pure ICE (internal combustion engine) markets.

The Ford F-150 Lightning placed second in terms of Ford electric vehicle sales volume, posting 2,038 deliveries during the second quarter of 2022. The Lightning continues to exceed FoMoCo’s expectations in terms of consumer demand, which far exceeded the automaker’s production capacity from the start.

The full-size electric truck continues to see sales increase with each passing month. In addition, the Lightning has become a mainstay on Kelley Blue Book’s list of the most considered electrified vehicles.

Ford electric vehicle sales – comprised of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit – increased 92 percent to 13,498 units in the United States during the second quarter of 2022.

Tech Cultivates Safer Culture

Next, in-vehicle fatigue and driver distraction technologies were introduced to provide immediate feedback to drivers. This included a camera systemalerting the driver via an audio warning and a vibration through their seat should indicators of fatigue be detected.

These sensorial alerts help drivers regain concentration, pull over and assess their fatigue level with their supervisor. The initial trial was very successful and the program to install the technology across the fleet is well advanced.

Based on the use of new technologies to prevent road accidents, TotalEnergies has made it mandatory for all new heavy vehicles in the Marketing & Services segment to be equipped with certain driver assistance systems(1) wherever these technologies are offered by manufacturers. In Marketing & Services, the decision was also taken to deploy fatigue detection systems in countries with high road risk, after conclusive testing over several months. More than 3,200 transportation vehicles are expected to be equipped by the end of 2022, representing approximately 30% of the entire fleet under long-term contract.

You’ve probably seen the stats that about 20% of new vehicles sold today are trucks. And why not? They’re imminently practical, comfortable, can go anywhere, and they’re cool. For decades the Ford F-150 has outsold every other truck, however, the Chevy Silverado is gaining ground and recently overtook Ram to become the second-best selling truck on the market.

So far in 2022, Chevy has sold 261,828 Silverado trucks. That was enough to eclipse the Ram brand, which started the year strong but fell off. Of the seven full-sized trucks you can buy today, Ford, Chevy and then Ram beat GMC, Toyota, Nissan and Hummer, in that order according to research firm Car Sales Base.

The Chevy Bolt EV is still alive as it delivers a record quarter of sales. There’s so much demand that GM announced its plans to increase production.

The Bolt EV seemed to be on life support for a while now. We had doubts that it would stay in GM’s lineup as the automaker launched a new generation of electric vehicles based on its Ultium platform – making the Bolt EV show its age.

Of course, the battery fires that led to a recall of all Bolt EV batteries also didn’t help the EV’s case.

But recently, GM confirmed that the Bolt EV and the bigger Bolt EUV are going to stay in its lineup for now.

Today, GM released its Q3 2022 delivery results, and the automaker confirmed that the Bolt EV and EUV had their best combined quarter for deliveries with almost 15,000 deliveries in the US:

GM also expects another record quarter in Q4 since it now has delivered about 22,000 Bolt EVs and EUVs so far this year, but it now says that it expects about 44,000 vehicles in 2022.

We heard that GM has already produced a lot of EVs that are sitting, waiting for chips. If they come in Q4, it could help GM quickly ramp up deliveries during the last few months of the year.

Now GM says that it plans to go from 44,000 Bolt EV and EUV vehicles in 2022 to “more than 70,000 in 2023

But there’s another, potentially even larger blind spot in Tesla’s sensing suite that Rowan says Volvo is doubling down on: driver monitoring.

Two cameras, monitored by proprietary Volvo algorithms, will monitor the driver at all times, Rowan said. “You have certain patterns, your head starts to nod, you start to jerk the steering wheel, and immediately the software can say, ‘This guy looks like he’s falling asleep, let’s wake them up.’ Or, if he’s inebriated, let’s pull to the side of the road.”

Detecting drunk drivers? Yes, Rowan says Volvo’s software can identify eye patterns indicative of inebriation, though the software isn’t finalized enough to be “definitive.” Distracted driving detection, however, is much further along: “The big one really for us is are they distracted on their phone. We find that a lot of, a lot of these accidents happen because these people are texting on their phone, and that’s a very distinct pattern that you can see when someone’s trying to text and trying to drive at the same time.”

Rowan declined to say whether and how Volvo’s cars in the future would actually intervene when a drunk driver is detected. While the EX90 will be able to safely pull itself over in the case of a driver falling asleep or suffering some sort of a medical emergency, whether it will do so in the case of simple inattention or inebriation remains to be seen.
