The key to fund managers is to be able to add value beyond simply stock picking. So one LIO fund I hold, loans out shares, receives a return that goes back into the fund. I can’t make profits that way myself, so it’s a plus. The industry hasn’t worked out how to “beat” tracker funds yet, and until it does, it will struggle in the short term in my view.
The above said, there is plenty of money slopping around the UK with pension funds and wealthy pensioners looking for a home for their money, so there will likely be a recovery in the near future - and especually when rates come down, as we all suspect.
