"Restoring Sweden as a mining country

This is a debate article. The opinions in the text are the writer's own.
Sweden has all the prerequisites to be one of the world's best mining countries with our extensive natural resources, outstanding research, leading companies and competent employees. When the annual mining ranking was released, however, Sweden lost big. Now a fresh start and a new focus on Swedish mining policy is needed.
Four years ago, Sweden was the eighth best mining country in the world. Now Sweden ends up in place thirty-six and after countries such as Russia, Mali and Ghana. The landslide is a direct result of how the government handled the mining issues.
We are in the middle of a green transition where we need more materials for everything from batteries to renewable energy. The European Commission has also pointed out Sweden as a country with unique conditions to meet the increased demand for critical raw materials in Europe. Therefore, we must do more to develop the mining industry in Sweden.
Despite uniquely good conditions, the government has handled the mining issues really badly. One of the biggest problems for mining companies is the long, expensive and uncertain permit processes. The government does not solve these problems, but makes cosmetic changes.
It is even more brutal in those cases where mine applications are ready for decision on the government's table. In Kallak there is an application for an iron ore mine. Last year, the Constitution Committee sentenced the Minister of Trade and Industry for not taking a single measure for three years to process and make decisions about Kallak. Nothing under three years. His actions have, of course, become known to the outside world and seriously damaged Sweden's reputation as a mining nation. Meanwhile, affected people and companies are living in insecurity and jobs are being lost.
In Laver, Boliden has applied to extract copper. The Minister of Trade and Industry has had the issue ready for decision on his table for several years and chooses to sneak out his negative decision in the evening the day before Christmas Eve. It is unethical and unserious. The result is clearly visible in the international mining ranking. A positive decision had also meant a lot to Älvsbyn after the big bakery fire.
