ODX is backed by the government and also by a very experienced scientist forming the consortium. This is why the want to make sure everything works perfectly well without leaving any detail unchecked. I think from now on, most of the testing will start focusing on the descending second part of the curve which is the de-confinement phase. This will be mainly concentrated on antibody testing as it helps countries to know who should go back to work/travel etc. Antigen testing won't go away of course and will be performed in parallel with the antibody test but in less volume than before, when infections and confinement started (Rising part of the curve). Let's imagine a person in an airport. 1/ First test: Antibodies. If the person is positive, no need to check if he/she has the virus - so no need for an antigen test (which is a lab test). 2/ If the person is negative for antibodies an antigen test is needed to check if he has the virus.
So we can easily see that antibody tests are performed all the time while the antigen tests are performed only when the antibody test is negative. So demand for antigen testing will reduce but will always be needed. In addition, the data collected on antibodies is very useful for research on the present and future pandemics.

Dibs61 - When I saw "100%" I couldn't believe this was coming from a scientist/mathematician. In one hand you have a human sample where each one has its characteristics and conditions, add to this the number of people involved, add to this that every machine and kit has its proper error margin, how on earth a scientist would claim 100% on anything ? When I saw that, I knew that the prime aim was to "steal" the market and grab the money.

The consortium are very serious and are checking that everything is perfect. The opposite of the business orientated pharmas claiming "100%" - which does not really exist as the samples are humans and the equipment has a margin of error. So at the end pf the day, by taking al their time instead of rushing as other seem to do, they are doing the right thing. At the end of the day they will come at the top. The UK scientific consortium has very bright people.

Re: Abbott - Sometimes even in science you can find a few charlatans especially in the US. So far the FDA eliminated a few of those proposing dodgy lab or POC test kits. The UK consortium for POC tests and the University of Oxford for the a vaccine, may be the winners at the end because elsewhere, everyone seems to be rushing to make money in this business without deep thoughts.

I think as many expected, a vaccine will take longer than anticipated and may never see the day as for HIV for instance. So testing will be the only available tool to be used to control and monitor the spread and the decay of the virus. Antibody testing will definitely play a major role in this and in every country for a long period. So this testing business will have a long life span with more manufacturing facilities needed to cater for billions.

For those who insist that the Roche lab test is the best solution I will ask to explain to us a scenario in London Heathrow airport where dozens of arrivals are waiting to be cleared for Covid -19. Describe to us how Roche test kit would help clear thousands of people and avoid huge queues and long waiting times for the results ? If we have a POC test such as the one being developed by ODX and consortium, it won't take days to clear.

Roche is a lab test, not convenient for masses queuing as the result can take a considerable time to come back. What when one sends millions of tests ? Do we have to wait a million days ?

As soon as the ODX consortium freeze the design, the POC test will be the real game changer because it can be used everywhere without waiting or queuing for hours or even days. In any case a laboratory test is useless for monitoring masses of people. It is only used in labs and involves lots of resources and time. It is unhelpful during pandemics. Any pandemic requires a POC test, not a lab test especially when dealing with hundreds of millions of people.
