The UK market has been demolished by shorting.
These hedge funds supported by UK government can take the price of any company to anywhere they want and It's probably why in defence the UK market pays one of the highest yields.
The risk is,many a quality British company is bought up on the cheap and as long as the UK government is hooked on the revenue these hedge funds provide, nothing will change.

If the government forced all new mortgages to be fixed rate for at least 5yrs preferably 10 at the same rate as a standard mortgage and zero early repayment fee, then I could see more people taking up these levels of debt otherwise it's very risky for the mortgagor.
It wouldn't cost the government anything and they would get the credit for protecting the consumer.

When sunny Jim Callaghan had to borrow $3.9bn of which only half was used and paid back 3 yrs later,debt was a very dirty word, now it's not.
The UK was in a better position in 1976.

We still had assets in hand with $2 trillion of oil in the ground and UK owned business.
We had a flat balance of trade,low level of national/personal debt and realistic interest rates which could be adjusted for growth.
Getting people into further debt will lead to lower interest rates for longer and would be very irresponsible.

I would think the dividend is likely to keep it higher than June 2016 although we have yet to have a Corona bomb shell like WHO declaring it a pandemic or the UK government confirming it's widespread within the population neither of which should actually reduce output.
Corona has been far too convenient for the Chinese government to cover this years reduced growth rate and other governments around the world will jump on the band wagon to cover up failures or a means to enforce obedience.
The advantages for the UK is if this virus sticks around we will never know the true cost of Brexit.

If Han**** is telling the truth and 80% of the population would only experience the symptoms of a common cold why would the Chinese close a factory down when you only need to send the elderly home.
How many over 65's work in these factories?

Another way to look at it would be for the elderly to protect themselves better to isolate and improve hygiene for a couple of months and leave the rest of the world economy to carry on as normal.
Protect those at highest risk,would this be too much to ask.
