Had a quiet lunchtime and Radio 4 asked the question "why are we doing this", I would think the government needs to ask itself the same question.

The elderly deserve our protection and before we totally trash the economy and the prospects of the rest of population, wouldn't you think £330bn could be better spent on an overdue social care package which could truly isolate the vulnerable until such time we have vaccine.
We could then let the economy return to some sort of normality.

To put it bluntly we are doing it to extend the life of our elderly population, when this is all over I hope they will be grateful.

What we will get is a whole raft of companies who are already in high debt choosing this moment to cut their losses and this debt will impact on the banks, so we're yet to have a spike but we will survive.

If only they had been encouraged to save over the past 10yrs we wouldn't be facing this problem today.

The Police have also voiced their concerns on self isolation of the over 70's.
They fear the elderly may attempt to approach, harass or dupe youngsters into purchasing toiletries to avoid ID age restrictions at supermarkets.
A Police spokesman said "the general public should be aware it is a criminal offence to knowingly purchase toilet rolls which are not for personal use and could face a £1000 fine or a 4 months house arrest sentence".

I actually agree with it but I can see some partners falling out when one is older than 70 and the other isn't and will the elderly be required to carry ID for proof of age if caught panic buying toilet rolls in Tesco's?
I guess the streets are empty at 4am for a stroll, if you're going stir crazy in the next 4 months.

whatever route the government takes, the care of the vulnerable has to take priority until such time a vaccine is developed and the budget didn't address any social care costs associated in isolating the elderly from the general population.
"Herd immunity" will require global consensus otherwise we run the risk of being treated like a "foot & mouth" nation having lost its accreditation, with no one allowed to visit or leave the UK.
A rather extreme form of Brexit with zero free movement of people.
