I agree to some extent Debt to GDP isn't a good measure and was surprised by the high levels in Scandinavian countries, as i don't deem them as highly capitalist but our figure is high for a large economy.
Back in 2010 the banks came under a lot of pressure to lend and I can see history repeating itself.Getting the banks to lend for economic growth avoids government responsibility and if they won't lend no one minds the banks being punished again.
When the debt pile fails at least other countries will be able to fall back on the physical wealth they have created.

Personal debt in the UK is 84% of GDP higher than US and most of Europe.I would think with a high level of financial services making up GDP our fig should be closer to that of Ireland's 48%.
