Autonomous vehicle software company Applied Intuition has raised $250 million in a round that values the startup at $6 billion, as it pushes to bring more artificial intelligence to the automotive, defense, construction and agriculture sectors.

The Series E round was led by Lux Capital, investor Elad Gil, and Porsche AG Investments Management, the sports car maker’s independent venture arm. Others joining the round were Andreessen Horowitz, and BOND.

Richard Griffiths tripled his holding in IQE

There was a boost for IQE last week as 'Welsh wizard' Richard Griffiths tripled his holding in the semiconductor firm to 7.6 per cent. Maybe his latest move will work some magic on IQE's share price, which has yet to recover from a plunge a year ago.

So it’s now or never for SEE in my opinion.

The long awaited SOP for BMW & Mercedes has begun so if we don’t get an uptick on cars on the road then we will be in trouble but if we do then this is the inflection point we’ve all been waiting for.

If the rear view mirror is a hit with OEMs then we could be in for a bonanza. Only 8 days till results & then we’ll see if any other announcements come after that!

Some buying by directors could also help the direction of the share price.

Seeing Machines is not subject to the UK City Code on Takeovers and Mergers. As a company incorporated in Australia, Seeing Machines is governed by Australian Corporations legislation. The Australian Corporations Act 2001 provides that, in general terms, once a person controls more than 20 percent of the shares of an Australian public company, they must make a takeover offer. There are a number of exceptions to this general rule, set out in Chapter 6 of the Corporations Act.

I don’t think Lombard own 31% otherwise they would have to by right make a take over offer as over 20%.

The next big thing will be in-cabin monitoring to detect whether the driver is distracted. Cameras will analyse drivers' eye and face movements to determine their attention levels.

An alarm will sound if the driver is distracted for more than 3.5 seconds at >30mph and above, and for six seconds below 30mph. This will apply across Europe to new car types from July 2024, and all new models from July 2026. Cars sold in the UK are expected to follow suit.

I don't know what will happen to the "black box" recording in the event of a crash- but would welcome any information from industry sources.

Seeing Machines

This is one of the great unknown success stories to come out of the Australian National University. Its progress toward profitability offers fascinating insights into the consequences of years of R&D investment in a technology that was once ahead of its time.

The company’s driver monitoring systems, which are used to combat fatigue and reduce car accidents, have been sold to a range of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) which sell products to global carmakers including BMW and General Motors.

CEO Paul McGlone says the company is at an inflection point because the amount spent on R&D as a percentage of revenue will fall from about 60 per cent to 20 to 30 per cent as revenue surges. In other words, a plunging R&D ratio will be a positive sign.

Seeing Machines, which is listed on the AIM market in London, has forecast a doubling in revenue to $US125 million by 2026.

The critical aspect of that forecast is that revenue from royalties will rise about nine-fold to as much as $US68.75 million.

McGlone says the royalties, which come from long-term contracts with OEMs, have a profit margin of about 95 per cent.

It would not be surprising if the valuation of Seeing Machines cracks $1 billion in the next two years as the market re-rates the stock on the back of higher revenue and the arrival of cashflow break even.
