RE: Copper price to rocket to $40,000 a tonne, says top trader Andurand27 May 2024 10:02
If the price is unsustainably high then demand will drop. People won’t buy EV’s if they are vastly more expensive than the alternative (as an example). We already saw this with rhodium when it spiked to US$30,000 / ounce. In the fibre glass industry rhodium dies were replaced with much cheaper rhodium alloys, resulting in stocks of rhodium being dumped back onto the market and a subsequent crash in price.
Companies are already testing the waters (so to speak) on the appetite for mining of seabed poly metallic nodules, potentially avast source of copper, cobalt and other metals… but with who knows what potential for damage to the marine environment.
Anyway hopefully Jubilee can start to meaningfully contribute to the copper shortfall in the near future. I see plenty of complaints about mistakes made by Jubilee over the years, yet the fact remains that they have achieved something with chrome that nobody else has yet achieved. Now they are trying to achieve the same with copper in a country with lots of infrastructure challenges. Maybe some people need to consider the bigger picture rather than focusing on little delays and mistakes.
The main issue for me at the moment is the power situation in Zambia. At the weekend, 12 hour loadshedding was announced in Lusaka. I’ve no idea how Jubilee will be affected but it’s clear that over reliance on hydro-power is likely to be a long term problem so a solution is needed. Perhaps dedicated solar plants at Roan and Sable?
