Point well made TWatcher. I've also been thinking about how strong the link between vaccines and antibody tests will be going forward. However, it's understandable that most countries main priority at the moment is get their vaccine orders in, and get them distributed. I think as this happens, focus will then begin to shift towards how effective these vaccines are proving to be. It's hard to imagine a country like the UK, who have orders in for 5 or 6 different vaccines (with widely varying efficacy, no doubt) , will not feel the need to monitor which ones are working and on which demographic. If they didn't do this, it would be tantamount to leaving it all down to some kind of postcode lottery. They would also want to know the effectiveness of each vaccine, to inform their decisions regarding vaccine re-ordering going forward.

Not sure, but TT is just about in progress to Omega, so you would assume they have a ‘completed’ product. Whether it’s at Porton Down, I don’t know.

Okhurst1: Thanks for the link earlier. Interesting read. I hadn't realised affimers are another form of Aptamer. Mologic using nucleic acid aptamers and Avacta using peptide aptamers (affimers). Will be interesting to compare results when they both come to market. Also, interesting that all roads lead to Cytiva. That's Avacta, Mologic and Genedrive all with links to the US company. Like you, I just wonder what magic sauce Cytiva bring to the table.

Re: Innova test

The vast majority of LFT's out there are using antibodies to capture the virus on the LFT. Antibodies appear to have their limitations in this regard, for instance, see criticisms of Innova's test (uses antibodies).

Mologic and Avacta are two of the very few companies that are using aptamers as their reagent to capture the virus - Mologic using Nucleic Acid aptamers and Avacta using Peptide aptamers (affimers). Aptamers are known for their high specificity and sensitivity, when capturing their targets. So, looks to me like Mologic and Avacta will be the two standout LFT tests going forward.

Was very reassured tonight reading that Mologic's test is not going to be just another run of the mill LFT test and that there is a very, very good chance it's going to be one of the best. That, along with the excellent ABC-19 antibody test stands us in very good stead indeeed.

Spotted a post earlier from the Avacta BB. Looks like Mologic test may well be a cut above the rest, as they're using 'optimers' provided by the Optima Group, in partnership with Cytiva.

Good point Olderandwiser. My thoughts these days are more that Avacta will succeed 'despite' AS, rather than 'because' of AS. Dare I say, quite a contrast in styles to Colin King at ODX. He prefers to stay under the radar and under promise and hopefully over deliver.

This has got comedy of errors written all over it. So, they split a pack at one location (hospital hubs initially), at which point you’ve then got 5 hours to vaccinate 975 people, before the vaccine goes off. Also, each of these 975 people have got to sit there for 15 minutes after receiving the jab, in order to be observed for adverse reaction.

You get 20 people in A&E and you’re looking at a 5 hour plus wait. Think they’ll be asking people to bring their sleeping bags for this one.

Yes, Moagli, I'm not sure what impact these extra protein factories would make to a currently infected person (nor, I assume is anybody else). Maybe we just end up with a virus with more legs (spikes) :)

Think ODX's argument is that you need antibody test to make sure the vaccines worked, especially in the case of AZ vaccine, which seems less effective than the others (on the face of it). My point was about checking for current infection before giving the vaccine, and to your point, yes I think this would need to be an accurate test. An accurate professionally administered LFT test with a 10 minute result would be ideal. Easily done in a doctors surgery setting.

I would think they'll have to test people for the virus before giving the Pfizer / Moderna vaccines.
The vaccine introduces RNA into our cells. RNA is a protein making machine. In this case, the RNA will make spike S1 protein
(in order that the body already recognises it when a person becomes infected by the actual virus).
So, imagine giving the vaccine to somebody already infected. You'd basically be assisting the virus in replicating.

Just have to keep in mind here, that we've got 3 or 4 or 5 shots on goal. And even my team, Man City, would score at least one of those. As frustrating as it can be, no need to get all hung up about test timelines. Covid's going to be a challenge for us all for many, many months to come and Avacta will feature strongly in facing that challenge. If we get something to market by end of January, I'm comfortable with that.
