Fleccy... to find the answer to your hypothesis it is far easier than you might at first glance imagine...
When the mills shut down, what did people do?
When the mines shut down, what did people do?
When the shipyards closed, what did people do?
As the high street shops and offices close, what have people done?
The answer is remarkably simple... People are incredibly creative and they just move on to do something different with their free time.
After the mills came factories with engineering which became over many decades increasingly specialised; from steam trains and early 20th century cars into Aerospace and high tech car manufacturing...
After the mines, came the oil, gas and nuclear industries...
After the shipyards, came fibreglass yachts, BAE systems nuclear subs and aircraft carriers...
The demise of the high street has delivered shopping apps, distribution warehouses and courier service jobs...
Things just evolve and there's absolutely nothing you can do to stop it!
