Bangladesh currently has an installed capacity of generating 22,562MW electricity, according to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
The maximum generation has been attained so far is 14,165MW.
The officials obviously run around and look at all potential maximum power generation and say ' that's what we are producing - haven't we done well.'
The reality is somewhat different and the idle generation capacity, scandalous.

The only good bit about the Digi proposal is, that it brings large-scale 'own' coal mining into focus.

….usual things, reports, investigations, committees . Loss of agricultural land ?? the Digi coal field is only 12 sq kilometres in size. Who is possibly going to pay the tens of millions $$ to undertake this project, when extraction rates are poor, skilled labour is in short supply and it will roll on and on and on due to inept management.
Open pit a Phulbari, decent compensation for the residents and on site power stations using the latest super-critical technology removing the carbon in advance - clever stuff this.
Otherwise...….coal extraction is still years away.

Interesting article, 10 MTPA of coal from domestic sources sounds promising. The lack of deep-sea port is going to cause import bottlenecks and requesting the Chinese pay for that, could be a big ask.

Jupiter - I have a nice Terex dumper too - very useful for moving a bit of coal. Not sure about 15million tonnes though.

I'm pleasantly surprised he is still there, the development costs associated with this project are enormous and probably way out of Michael Tang's accountancy 'comfort zone'. He could be fulfilling a very important role.

...in our favour, we mustn't overlook our partners in this venture - China Gezhouba, (CGGC), Power-China and China Nonferrous. Putting together a team like that was no mean task and a credit to Michael Tang.
The area where the water gets a bit murky is with Dyani, though DG as lobbyists, was probably a good move.
I would suggest we are fairly near the endgame now, the Coal Conference will enable the Energy Ministry to announce the intended project to the world.
I agree with Marv, there was no-way we could have a platform there without pre-empting the GofB announcement, if there was to be one.
If it all fails and the plan is rejected, I would think the Licence to Mine will have little value without a permit and would probably revert to the sovereign state, ie. Bangladesh.
Hang in there another 30 days - it's not lost yet.

With regard to GCM, we are at the point whereby in the next 30 days, this is either a fully funded go-er, or its game over for now.
There cannot be a Coal Convention at the end of March which does not include 'own coal from Phulbari' on the agenda.
Its an opportunity to announce a China / Bangladesh partnership which will deliver 6000MW of low-cost electricity, to the nation. A Chinese funded project which will utilise the country's own high quality coal and a project which will be transformational for the inhabitants of the Rangpur region.
There we are, I have written the PR blurb, they just need to now get on with it.
If we don't feature at the convention, after a whole year of extra time and preparation, then Michael Tang has failed.

Their railway construction skills are undoubted, they have that 500 tonne machine which is fed with steel lines one end and spits completed track out the other end. I guess that was part of the reason Jingye was weighing up their bid for British Steel and its track manufacturing capabilities.

The funding for our project is still a bit too vague but the key is to get a commitment from GoB and Hasina by the end of March.
I find it impossible to believe that they will have the Coal Conference without a an announcement of their intended 'direction of travel' with the Phulbari project.

Why do you say this - are you one of her ministers, are you part o her entourage..?
Maybe Gary Lye told you this in confidence and that all Michael Tangs efforts are in vain.
But, rather like your comments on the ex-chairman of Petrobangla, you delight in being negative and are happy to promote an agenda of no progress on the project, all just to satisfy all your doom and gloom predictions.
This is not 2007, this is the era of huge Chinese expansion in SE Asia, of the Belt & Road initiative and a recognition that this coal project has a limited shelf life.
Hasina may not be an economist, but even so she must realise that very soon she will be hostage to Qatar on gas and the vagaries of the international markets for coal. The current raft of power station are mired in mis-management, cost / time overruns and cannot even access the coal they need to power them.
The Phulbari Project is a beautifully packaged and funded opportunity ready to go.
In a nutshell, I think you are wrong.....this will be happening very soon.
