I can’t entirely disagree with that. As I’ve said for a long time that I just consider COVID a bonus.....but that bonus could be bloody massive for the next year or two ;)

They're not starting from scratch.
They went straight into phase 2 trials not phase 1. Precisely because they already have plenty of data. They probably have a good idea it might work for COVID as a result. The point of the trial is to prove this! They'll want to show it can work for people who don't have pre-existing conditions like COPD.
So it's simple, they want to show it works for people with existing problems, like COPD, and they want to show it works for people who don't have existing problems, but are at risk of developing problems due to the COVID virus.
The drug is the same but there's a different in the target group. So two trials.

I'm not sure why you're splitting hairs over the tense.
Obviously it's a drug in development, which was nearing completion of the trial, and obviously if it was already confirmed it would be in a different place and worth a load more.
You can drink Dettol if you like to try to cure your virus.......but I think it's only you and Donald Trump considering this.
Personally I think I'd rather inhale some interferon beta and I imagine most of the world (bar those in the Tea Party) probably would too!

JP001 - I don't know why you seem to think there's been a massive shift in strategy. I don't think there's been ANY shift in strategy.

COVID simply presented a massive opportunity to the company because they had a drug that helps the body fight off viruses. Which meant they were suddenly hot property, could raise a large amount of cash, enough to do a trial to see if they could treat COVID (past data already having shown it might work), and that doesn't take anything away from their original study in COPD. So they're now a far better cashed up company with two shots at success (three if you split COVID into early/late stage treatment). It would have been madness to pass up this opportunity (especially with government funding options to potential progress things further later). In many ways it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for the company.

Ghia - I'm not sure you understood my post. I'm not talking about now. I meant in the absence of COVID, which means in the absence of all the extra funding, and don't think things would have been delayed till xmas with the associated dilution and effect on the mcap.

"Without Covid investors would still be awaiting the winter virus season to finish the COPD trial"....I seriously doubt that. They already had 109 of 120 dosed. If it was 80/120 maybe. I suspect they'd just have concluded the trial with 110 patients. Wouldn't be enough value in that long of a delay for that small amount of extra patients.

I think the answer to that is pretty clear.......people wanted to invest in something that might have a treatment for a giant worldwide pandemic. ;)
I'm slightly different to most, in that I was invested here well before COVID, because I think the treatment has a good chance of success in things like COPD and was mistakenly jettisoned by AstraZeneca due to a flawed trial that didn't confirm virus presence or account for interaction with steroids.

Doing a home trial lets you treat earlier stage patients yes that's the point :p

They simply had an opportunity to get a large number of patients in a short space of time (COVID) and do the trial on that.
If they can show efficacy on COVID, regardless of COPD, then it's an even better result than focusing on people with existing conditions like COPD.
So you potentially get an even bigger win than just applicability to people with underlying respiratory issues.

Still within the bounds where I wouldn't say it's broken free yet Taff8. Penny or two more though and it's getting interesting.

Sounds like a few twerps are getting very desperate for people to sell. Probably put a short on when they saw Acacia dumping and are getting increasingly concerned that the price isn't dropping. Knowing full well what will likely happen when a large holder finishes selling.

And now, even if the COVID trial doesn't prove effective, the company will almost certainly have significantly higher cash reserves.
So they could sit pretty, if COPD is successful, without immediate need for cash, and not rush at the first offers they receive for it.

dafad - and aside from that. If you've got a drug that can help people fight off respiratory viruses.....and there's a giant pandemic that it can help with. Why on earth would you not switch to testing that!? Not only could it help the world it could be a company maker in itself if it works and generate insane returns. The COPD study is still there and they've now got two bites at a cherry. It would have been weirder if they'd not jumped at this opportunity!

Whether it's good or bad result on any of the trials it will prove nobody right.

Whatever the result it's just plain silly all the blame being dished out here, at the company, market makers, shorters, and everything else. The results won't change that whatever they are.
