Obviously the macro economic is not helping either as short to mid-term holders are keeping in cash.

No sooner had the China Crisis cooled off then people woke up to the fact the the UK could be heading for a General Election has Theresa May lost the Brexit vote. Monks - Agree, the DOW took it hard yesterday for the 2 stocks you pointed out. But to loose 12p in one session for no direct reason (US miners are not getting hit) then you have to ask who is dicking around here. The market is so nervous at the moment, China, Europe, Brexit etc that it's like some vietnam vet (and not the ones who fix animals)

Not convinced of either of those explanation to be honest. The Dow is hardly crashing. The FTSE is still strong, although slightly faded. Nothing out there should be making this happen. Just people sh**thing their pants like kids and the slightest thing as usual.

Although Jim is correct here, his view is based on an open ended tit-for-tat situation. My feeling is, this was a gambit from Trump, which he always starts, in order to get the sides around a table. You have to remember that more than half of Trump's fiscal team are ex-GS, like Jim, so will share a similar view. It's unlikely that this will continue much longer. The second 'talks' are announced, this will fly back up.

JMO - If the US markets finish around the -0.5% down mark tonight then I think there will be a sense that that tariff 'shock' will have run it's course, certainly in the western markets. As with all these things, it can take a while for people to ascertain what is going on as they pick through the rubble. I think we would have seen the the low 360s today had the markets been weaker but I sense that, providing there is no shock news, then a couple of days of low up-tick could be upon us. Again, save a bullet for the messenger.

Watch as the market in the US comes back into reasonable range during their trading times. Remember it's 23.30pm in Beijing at the moment and 11.46am in New York, so there is a gap for the markets to recover. My feeling is the Chinese and US are already on the phone. Both must realise that Tariffs are just pre-meeting tactics and don't get you anywhere.

I'm only in this for 5k, so hardly a heartbreaker but I do get the sense we are likely to get a bit more news on this soon. Just a hunch. It drifted down before we had news last time, that said, a few people had their fingers burned on the hype.

I think it could be a few different things. The US is still reacting to the asia drop but Germany has some problems with the Merkel chancellorship and AfD challenge.

Those who think this is going to drop further should keep in mind of timings. 1) Last night was the first time the Chinese markets has a chance to react to Trump's Friday tariff announcement and the Chinese riposte. 2) Normally Trump like to hit them with a double hit (think NK here) then goes quiet and the talks begin in the background.

I'd suggest we could get something tomorrow.

JMO - To be honest, I think the EU will kind of drop to bits within the next 24 months. Too many moving part and all moving away from the central idea that that unelected 'ex-politicians' can rule the political direction of so many countries and cultures. Brexit will be an irrelevance and it does make you think that Theresa May could be trying to kick the can down the road for that very reason.

JMO - If it is overturned, why would anyone be bothered about voting again. Doesn't matter what the majority want anymore, it's all about minority pressure groups. It's would undermine any sense of democracy and would create such a schism in society that it would affect the union in ways we cannot even imagine. The EU is a sinking ship and I think with Merkel on the ropes and Italy and others on the verge of referendums, I think the UK's situation will become an irrelevance. Poland are due to have a referendum in the Autumn which is likely to go against the EU.

No one wants the HS2 which was part of the Euro-Rail strategy, who wants to spend 20 mins longer in Birmingham for Christ-sake? In an age of super fast internet most companies now have clawed back on travel spending and are throwing it at video conferencing etc, so the business case for HS2 is totally flawed. No one ever challenges the government on it outrageous spending. Example, Stonehenge Tunnel is costing £1.6bn !

It depends. These tariff announcements are coming thick and fast daily now, sooner or later the market will become a little immune to them. It's all about who is going to blink first. The BoE are unlikely to put up interest rates, so that might create some relief for commodities but not much.
