The SCSW statement on VLX EV participation from January is :-
EVs - the big swing factor
In the few months during the first lockdown, there was a noticeable high demand for power cords from certain sectors (mainly laptops, printers and gaming consoles), which boosted sales. This demand is now normalising and by far the biggest opportunity for the cable division is now coming from EVs.
Volex makes the “charging cord” for Tesla, which comes with every car. This has a conventional three-prong plug that goes into a wall socket, with a connector for the car's charging port on the other end and a box of electronic circuitry between them. The charging cord will test the circuit when you plug it in, to ensure that it’s properly grounded and the current is strong enough to power the charger. The gadgetry will monitor the power and the heat and has built-in safety cut-outs. Volex only entered the space in 2018 when it was approached by a leading EV manufacturer that was being supplied with cables that were not robust enough (water ingress, quality issues, breakages) and now Volex’s track record in meeting delivery times and having a quality product is key to why it is getting specified on “several new German and US EV programs.”
