Quady is right, in fact I've seen many documentaries about the last time Labour, the unions and privatisation collided to destroy us in the 1970s, and they seem determined to take us back there (PS Quady, we even had a massively hot summer then too but no "global boiling")

The NHS has snowballed in what it provides from its inception, to try and keep it totally free is absolutely doomed to failure. The more money we throw down the black hole that is the NHS, the worse it gets. Cast your mind back to when you could get a doctor's appointment the same day or the doctor would even call to your house. It was before Labour and Bliar opened the doors to mass immigration which has led the overwhelming of our services and destruction of our country.

There are simple and practical measures to improve the NHS and take some financial burden away. Have premium appointments say £25 a shot at the start and end of the day for those willing to get them who don't want to lose a day's work/pay. Freeloaders can take the intraday ones.

Prioritise operation waiting lists for those who actually work. Get them back into the economy and paying taxes

Introduce fines for those treated who are inebriated to part cover the cost

Get rid of swathes of middle management pen pushers, bureaucracy and preferred suppliers.

There are loads of practical solutions to streamline the NHS if we let go of this stupid concept that it can heal everyone, all the time, for nothing, on demand.

Privatisation is the only way you get accountability or competition. Look at everything that is in the hands of the state from the woeful NHS right down to every single council

All are completely useless because there is zero accountability. There are no consequences for failure.

If a council doesn't provide a service to me, that's my hard luck. If I don't pay them for their failures, I can face prison

You can make some argument for energy and even rail but everything else needs to be fully in the private sector. Only then does innovation drive efficiencies and better outcomes for all. We are paying gold plated pensions and guaranteeing jobs for life for useless, demotivated, self-entitled spongers.

The plain fact is that disastrous energy policy is destroying our country. Cheap energy = prosperity. We need coal power stations and get drilling and fracking.

Garbage brad, British Steel absolutely flourished after privatisation and provided a lot of good jobs. Our steel was exported all around the world

What has crippled it is successive governments Net Zero policies and levies making our energy costs far higher than any competitors in the world.

For anything energy intensive like making steel, that is game over. We just can't compete

Our energy policies are going to impoverish a vast portion of this nation.

Not a problem, I guess these forums have many uses but sharing information and knowledge should be up there.

If you trade regularly, or invest decent amounts then make sure you have a Level 2 data feed and understand it. There's not that much to learn but it certainly gives you a better view of what is actually going on. I use Sharescope but there are one or two cheaper ones such as Quotestream and even LSE's own L2 offering. Particularly with SETS stocks you can see all sorts going on that you'd otherwise be blind to and you can adjust your own strategies accordingly.

Also consider spread betting if you don't already as this of course gives you cheap, tax-free access to both long and short positions on many instruments.

Dusty, apologies I missed your post earlier. I could bore for England on market mechanics and platforms but I shall try and be brief.

SETSqx replaced SEAQ for small cap/low volume stocks, the latter still exists and is used for other instruments such as Bonds.

To simplify it, SETSqx is a market maker driven electronic order book. Every market maker participating in a stock must make a firm bid and a firm ask for at least as many shares as the Exchange Market Size (EMS) as determined quarterly in the London Stock Exchange trading parameters. To trade these stocks, non market-makers must get quotes from an intermediary.

In contrast SETS is a fully automated electronic order book which anybody with Direct Market Access (DMA) is allowed to participate in. Essentially that is anybody who pays for the DMA service. Orders can be placed using software tools or at a lower level using APIs and this is what people refer to as "algos" - some are software algorithms placing orders using DMA APIs. Market makers will also appear in SETS stocks but they don't get the floor to themselves as is the case on SETSqx

When you see a trade type against a trade, the main two are AT - Automatic, and OB -Off Book. These simply mean that the order book automatically matched some orders or that it happened off book and was reported. You will notice all of the trades other than Uncrossing trades on GSCU are off book - that is because it's on SETSqx and there is no DMA and hence no automatic matching

Uncrossing trades/auctions are a whole other topic and very interesting. At least I think so!

But there's always the same number of shares on both the bid and the offer owing to absence of DMA orders
