Picture the scene, the vaccine is amazing, the 90% claim is true and everyone queues up to get it. Absolute best case vaccine result is a good proportion of the population will be immune for an unknown length of time. Hmmm, doesn’t sound like testing will stop long term, but let’s be positive and dream it’ll be gone in 14 months time.

All of the above refers to the U.K. alone. Meanwhile Awacta have ramped up to 100m tests per month. Everywhere on the planet that doesn’t have the infrastructure or the money to get their hands on this miracle vaccine will see Covid continuing to spread. Quite a few will jump on planes keeping this in circulation. The demand for testing globally will remain for many years and will be needed for ongoing monitoring. If the LFD lives up to expectations and exceeds requirements then everywhere will want a stockpile and it’s the perfect tool to quickly get on top of any outbreaks. Even in the absolute best case for a vaccine, a huge amount of testing still remains.

Then consider the realistic case, it’s not 90% it’s actually more like 50%. Not me talking, here’s a quote from Prof Sahin:

‘I'm very confident that transmission between people will be reduced by such a highly effective vaccine - maybe not 90% but maybe 50% - but we should not forget that even that could result in a dramatic reduction of the pandemic spread’

I’ll tell you what else could see a dramatic and more immediate reduction, mass screening. Test, test, test.

Perhaps there should an equal law passed regarding pro-vaccine fake news such as a 90% effectiveness claim when they haven’t got a clue yet.

Then consider that assumes that take up will be good, that there are no safety concerns and that there are no mutations in the meanwhile. A best case of 2024 suggests we’ll need regular testing for several years. It’s worth reading a few other articles on that website. They’re much more interested in the AstraZeneca jab, the Pfizer -80degrees unproven impractical jab is useless in India as it’ll be impossible to roll out. I’m sure the 1.3bn people over there would like some game changer tests.

Then consider Sir Al has said, time and time again, it’ll be needed for years and they’ll sell all they can make. Do you think vaccines emerging is a surprise to anyone? The attempts at scaremongering on here is ridiculous and it’s probably about time we stopped bothering to talk about vaccines, although I suppose it’s a nice change from ‘is it us?’

Depends on take up, which isn’t likely to get near the levels required to stop transmission. The other way to stop transmission? Testing. It’ll be needed for years. It’s not a surprise that vaccine trials results are coming through. The large drop was manufactured by the scum in the city in the hopes of shaking out the PIs, there was no volume on the way down. It’s corrupt, but it’s the way it goes. Don’t make a mistake of correlating corrupt share price movements with reality. Ultimately, money talks, if the whopping great 120m test a month contracts arrive there’ll be no problem with the share price.

Quick correction. We have a working test. We don’t have a clinically validated and mass manufactured test.

The media seem to be omitting that’s it’s a trial and the govt seem to be ploughing on whilst ignoring the flaws. Not the best combo. Quite right though Doh, it’s all good for Awacta, I’d rather they made a pig’s ear of it and ironed things out with some Chinese rubbish rather than undermining the game changer

Exactly, right now anything is better than nothing, but unless it’s perfect only criticism is given. Luckily, the holy grail that will exceed requirements for the infectious whilst being easy to use is on the way

Worth a watch, 20 mins in on last night’s programme. More of Deeks pedalling his negativity about LFDs. The numbers are from the published study and they’re not great as we know. False negatives don’t help with the spread, if fact incorrectly could give confidence to people and false positives result in people isolating unnecessary.

BUT, they are not making any distinction that the results are poor as the test that’s being rolled out wasn’t designed for the asymptomatic and wasn’t designed to be used by the public. That’s the flaw. Negative news articles and snippets like the one on Newsnight undermine public confidence in the concept. The true positives found will include cases that otherwise wouldn’t have been found. Test and trace is a shambles that barely finds anyone, but when they do I’m sure the proportion of people that are unnecessarily isolating is much higher as all contacts are asked to do so. The negative focus should be on the procurement of an unsuitable test from China, not LFDs and mass screening in general.

It all paves the way beautifully for Sir Al’s dribbly test though. If it genuinely does exceed requirements using saliva as we’ve been told, then it’s an absolute game changer. It addresses all the criticism levelled at Innova as there will be fewer false negatives due to ease of use and fewer false positives due to affimers. If you watch Newsnight you’ll understand why it’s going to be worth the wait to get it right. We’re midway through Q4 now so that’s well in to squeaky bum time, good luck to all

I’m expecting a similar pattern to innova, a cheeky 20m tests order to start before the orders of £1bn at a time start rocking in on a monthly basis. Good post. I agree, here's hoping the development continues. I can't see it having an impact on this pandemic but if covid becomes endemic then a quick awacta test followed by an awacta pill might happen one day. If it can work for this virus why not others. Have I got Flus For You could be reborn as a treatment
