RE: Northern Powerhouse1 Oct 2018 13:13
I must admit that I do find the information at the very least unimpressive, and perhaps, a little discomfiting also. It is quite clear a level of neglecting responsibility has taken place. However, what is more unsettling is that government went to such lengths to conceal the information — something that quite possibly tells us more than the original revelation itself.
Personally, I couldn’t give a fig about where James Wharton was born (or any of his successors come to that), however, I do expect that any minister - whatever their portfolio and remit - should put in the time and effort necessary to fully appraise themselves of the circumstances and situation they are expected to manage. In this instance, by default, that should actually involve spending a requisite amount of his time actually in the north and getting to know the level of need, hopes, and expectations his department is supposed to oversee — and that involves talking to people in the area. After all, should any election loom, I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t see him canvassing for his seat from the ‘comfort’ of Westminster, would we?
