Steviemon, you should be able to do a 'bed and isa' if you phone them, where the sell and buy is done within seconds and with a very small spread.
My broker is generally pretty useless and they are smallfry compared to Halifax and they managed to do it with a bit of persuading, so I'm sure yours can to.

How else can an MM operate unless they can sell short or buy long? Otherwise they'd have to match individual buyers to individual sellers!

Ok maybe strictly speaking they don't HAVE to but as it's how they make their living it's more likely they will.
MM's do have the freedom to sell short freely in order to do their job, that is a fact. And they will endeavour to address any imbalance in their books in a way that makes them profit - again fact.

The MM's have to take the order as it's the whole point of them being there. If they don't have the shares to fulfil a buy order they will short-sell and then do their damndest to buy them back lower, hence today's shenannigans.

In other words they play loosely-holding traders like a fiddle to ensure they come out on top.

The MM's gain whatever trades they want to fill orders or anticipated future orders, to balance their books etc.

The MM's are clearly desperate to break holder's resolve today and get stock back before the coming news and webinar. Moving down on buys, up on sells, rapid movements to cause confusion. Random online limits. Seen it all before.
