At the moment it is not required as the gas into Ireland via the interconnector is configured only to allow gas to run from Britain to Ireland. However, exporters are able to nominate virtual reverse flows on the pipeline. The gas is not physically sent to Britain but subtracted from the gas flowing into Ireland. Hence the exports are only possible when sufficient gas is flowing into Ireland.
So the NI gas dealers have a guaranteed daily gas input from the pipeline with prices varying daily however with gas storage they could hold more gas and trade it when it is higher than purchase price.
However sure the uk gov would want some of that storage so a 2nd pipeline would be required and certainly if they intend on exporting green hydrogen.

Guess i should add Blfast has a good chance because ease of access and Ships Stabiliser deployment, inspection and repair (Rosyth dry dock is not wide enough to deploy Stabilisers)

Have to go back to Aldbrough that was ver similar to IM salt caverns again and a long legal process but turned out fine with no enviromental problems infact to the extent that they have applied for PP for aditional caverns for hydrogen

FWIW i think a JR is possible however cant see it making any difference to us. A public consultation has already occured which is the time to voice any concerns of which all have been answered. In effect the dispute would be against DAERA and the advisors. Mr Poots has made that very clear he has followed advice from the science and 3rd parties.
Again i harp back to NI energy strategy which will make IM an interest of national energy security along with the Hydrogen storage which will also be included in the stratedgy.
