Nom
The 13th picture is a staircase, I can’t imagine how many hours went into that, it’s a work of art ..
I’m just a wood butcher really, site work… I worked on making blast proof windows for the cabinet office in London, many years ago, we were manly manufacturing the windows in a large unit near Southampton..
Most or us were on short term contracts working 7 days a week, the unit we were working out of was on a short term rent, the main permanent carpentry shop was very close buy, this particular day I was doing a job that required a granny’s tooth plane (hand router plane), I didn’t own one..
So I was sent over to the other Workshop that produced hand made furniture for and the like of the cabinet office and Downing Street, I actually got to see a spare no10 door, painted buy hand but looked like the best spray job I had ever seen…
I was pointed in the direction of this old chippy, who I was told has a granny’s tooth plane, the old fella was making a hand made chair, we are talking quality, I introduced myself and politely asked if it would be possible for me to borrow his plane? I was 8loody nervous, it was like asking him if i could have a go on his wife…
He made me promise to look after it, I assured him I would, we got chatting about wages, it turned out, I as a 25ish year old was on a better hourly rate than him…. I was useless and wet behind the ears, I’m almost 51 and i still don’t have a quarter of the skill level of that old chippy…
I often think how sad it is that guy like him are a dying breed..
It’s cheered me up to see it’s not completely dead yet … we need to invest in our young people and bring our skill levels back up, trouble is, kids are being told they need to go to uni…
