GOV briefing that $unak will announce HS2 will go ahead but use existing tracks between Birmingham and Manchester. As any fool knows, when you mix high and low speed trains on the same tracks you reduce capacity as you need more space between trains on the same section of track.

Any increase in the speed of an individual train ('high speed'?) means that there will be less overall capacity on that stretch of line. So $unak will stand beneath a banner claiming to make long term difficult decisions in the National Interest and announce a plan to hobble HS2 that will make local travel reliant on the Manchester to Birmingham tracks worse.

I think that they are alienating far more of their traditional voters than they realise. They may be winning some UKIP / Reform / Nasty party members but each one will come at the cost of a couple of centre right voters. They have not learnt from Voting in the Lettuce Loser.

A cynic might say that completely cancelling the delayed deal would be significant news. Their cash runs out soon, so cash must come from somewhere very soon.
