World Health Orgn observed that Botswana is also leading the pack of countries that continues to experience large jumps in daily case counts, accounting for 171%. Bots is followed by Vietnam 146%; USA 68%; Indonesia 44%; Malaysia 44%; UK 41%.
The Geneva based organisation warns that Botswana is experiencing its worst surge of cases since the country reported its first Covid case last year.

Not directly relevant to Tlou per se, but another example where the ‘on the ground’ stuff simply doesn’t support the wider global narrative that Botswana is Best in Class for mining, corruption, transparency, jurisdiction, etc.

Anyone that thinks the Khama (old guard) v Masisi (new guard) is not affecting how Botswana Govt is functioning should take a little time to better understand local matters. And Serowe is Khama’s back yard and power base - now do you really think new guard Govt are going to accelerate investments into that general area…..

Francistown needs massive investment flows (first); Sibelius-Phikwe town needs resolution to restart the mine (due diligence ongoing, ends August apparently); 2 new major copper mines are progressing at pace; Debswana and Lucara have committed to their own mine extensions …

If you are worried about catching Covid-19, then Botswana is the last place you should be considering as a safe sanctuary, at least for now.

The risk of being infected with the deadly virus is currently highest in Botswana compared to all other countries in the Southern African region.

Data from the Reuters Covid 19 Tracker has revealed that Botswana is currently the region’s infection hotspot with the infection rate as high as 378 per 100k people recorded in the past seven days. Botswana’s infection rate is classified as “at peak and rising.”

The second most dangerous country in the region in terms of covid-19 infections is Namibia which has recorded an infection rate of 334 per 100k people in the last seven days. Unlike Botswana, Namibia is at 68% of peak and falling.

South Africa is third at 201 per 100k infection rate in the past seven days. Zimbabwe comes up at fourth place with 112 per 100k infection rate. This means Batswana are more than three times more likely to be infected by covid than their Zimbabwean counterparts. Angola on the other hand is currently the safest country in the region with two infections per 100k. The figure suggests that Batswana are more than 100 times more likely to catch the virus than Angolans.

While Botswana’s infection rate is currently on steroids, the country’s covid 19 vaccine rollout speed has been slowing down markedly over the past three weeks.

Lastly, on the 300MW coal station - they say the funding will come from the Chinese… Who was it that stuffed up Morupule B? This one is a long way from generating - for sure MM. But not for the reasons you were alluding to….

The kick in the teeth for Tlou is - 100MW tender to build a gas powered station was issued in early 2017, 4 and half years ago and still no PPA awarded. Supposedly is under negotiation, but given the delay … is something happening we don’t yet know about …
300MW coal powered station tender recently out and award imminent if the Mmegi article can be trusted. (It is a local newspaper so I wouldn’t be minded to simply accept.)
Molale said ‘prove the gas concept’ in 2018 and that is the way to go…. Govt seems to not want anyone to prove the gas concept given its ongoing actions - why?
Is this 300MW proven coal plant the reason? Or part of the reason? It is moving at a faster clip that CBM 100MW for sure …. So if that isn’t a slap in the face for Tlou, pray tell me what is.
