RE: Households cancel streaming services to cut costs, report says19 Apr 2022 19:40
People can purchase all the streaming services they would like, but it doesn’t help the fact that the days of day-and-date release for big films are long gone. Disney tried that once we started reopening and the u-turn back to a theatrical window was rapid, the whole thing backfired when high-quality downloads were available online within just hours for big films like Black Widow.
People want to watch the film as soon as possible, because otherwise the whole thing gets spoiled on social media. The theatrical window is here to stay, and even though it’s shorter I think it is still a fantastic thing. If you watched No Time To Die a few weeks after it first debuted you’ll have seen that the screens were fairly empty, maybe just about 5-10 per screening. People watch films as soon as they can these days, so that makes up for a shorter theatrical window.
The money will come rolling in regardless of the streaming platforms, the movie studios likely perceive them as a threat rather than a helper due to password sharing, piracy etc etc.
Roll on Top Gun and Dr Strange, I’m expecting some big numbers for both of these. Concessions and advertising thrown into the mix, and I think we can expect a cash flow positive result in May hopefully.
