RE: Huge projects23 Nov 2020 11:01
I have been in touch with the protesters, via the Faversham Society, for quite a few months and first alerted them to the safety benefits of VFB's and the fire risks of lithium batteries. Up until then they had never heard of vanadium much less VFBs nor were they aware of fire risks of lithium. I made representation to the minister of state, MPs and the local fire services. The bottom line is the Government is quite happy to believe the assurances over safety given by the battery suppliers but the over-riding situation is that the developers of the site have a history of setting up projects and then selling them on. Cleve Hill will probably be the same so initial cost is the name of the game. They are not interested in the cost benefit spread over 20 or 30 years.
Timing has been crucial here IMHO. Had IES, in it's present form, been around a couple of years ago and the informed protests started then, the developers might have changed the storage to VFBs. Coming in when they did with the information, it was always going to be almost impossible to change this aspect of the project. The fight goes on nevertheless.
You might be interested to note that there are 7 special measures being implemented, on top of normal ones, to address the fire risk issue. The measures require that the hardware installed is of good quality and fit for purpose and adequate maintenance and monitoring is carried out by adequately trained personnel over the lifetime of the project, some 30 years. Good luck on that especially when cost cutting comes in.
