RIP to an amazing man - Mikhael Gorbachev30 Aug 2022 23:00
The last leader of the Soviet Union Mikhael Gorbachev died earlier in the day at the age of 91, the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital announced on Tuesday.
"Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a serious and long illness," the hospital said in a brief statement. The late politician has suffered a series of health issues in the past few decades, which caused him to halt international travel in 2015. In June 2022, the online newspaper Mash reported Gorbachev was undergoing treatments for problems with kidneys.
Gorbachev served as the leader of the USSR from 1985 until its dissolution in 1991. During his tenure, he implemented significant pro-democratic reforms, most notably "glasnost," which enabled more freedom of speech and press, and "perestroika," decentralizing the country's economy. In 1990, Gorbachov was awarded Nobel Peace Prize.
