EU considers windfall tax to cut soaring energy prices - report6 Sep 2022 22:36
The European Union is planning to introduce a windfall tax on energy companies in order to tackle the issue of skyrocketing energy prices, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, the plan, which will be discussed this Friday, aims to target producers of fossil fuels and low-carbon power generators, who have managed to garner great profits as a result of the current crisis.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared that the bloc is preparing a set of proposals to help vulnerable households and businesses cope with the increase in energy prices.
