Well on the plus side it seems as though the Gov is now going to be permitted to lay the proposal before Parliament, so that’s progress from yesterday. On the downside, it is increasingly clear that there is a committee stage, and that itself now seems to be the subject of contention as to what committee or committees it should be. Both sides agree that this is not going to be rushed through, unfortunately

I had not appreciated that the government only holds a 1-seat majority in Parliament (thank you Teddy for pointing that out). In fact, it seems the two main parties have 137 seats each and there is one independent, who I can only assume generally votes with the government: https://www.parliament.gh/stats.php

Thanks Teddy. None of us can know how many MPs will turn up tomorrow or the day after or any other day. I would like to know what the stages of the process are, i.e. whether the proposal has to go off to a committee and be reported on before there can be a vote to ratify, and if so how long that normally takes. If the answers are “yes” and “several weeks”, the number of MPs who turn up would seem to be almost academic as far as the 22 July deadline is concerned

There was an hour adjournment at 1:15 UK time but when they came back at 2:15 they just counted the number present (24) and adjourned again, with no time specified

Hi Jack, I’m afraid I didn’t catch the number although I think they did explain it if you want to wind the video back (I only heard part of the relevant bit as I was as doing other stuff at the same time). I didn’t get the impression it was a very high number. It also wasn’t very clear to me what the precise significance of the number was, as at one point there was some suggestion the Speaker could override the normal requirements. Generally I found it somewhat difficult to follow (not blaming the MPs for that: they spoke clearly; I just wasn’t able to listen the whole time and of course I’m not familiar with Ghanaian parliamentary procedure).

I agree with the poster who says what if a few more MPs turn up but the vote goes the wrong way. As I understand it the opposition are not keen on the ML on its current terms and, whilst we might feel confident of a majority victory if everyone is present, an ultra-low turnout seems to increase the risk of an unpleasant surprise, if the opposition are just a bit more motivated. Think the government needs to pull its finger out and crack the whip at its MPs tbh

If I understand correctly, there was another argument this morning about there not being enough MPs present, they adjourned for an hour to see if more might turn up, they have resumed just now, done a head count (24), it’s not enough so they’ve adjourned again, as far as I can indefinitely.

In addition, if I understood this morning’s procedural debate correctly, the thing that is currently being delayed is the laying of the proposal before Parliament, but it then has to go off to a committee before coming back for a vote. I think someone said the last day of this Parliamentary session is 22 July, and they don’t sit on Mondays, so are we now looking at 4 business days remaining to get the proposal tabled, and have the committee sit and report, and have the vote?

Very encouraging, Molaoi could be a monster by the sounds of it. 1 lode down/in progress, 11 more to go as and when needed to support mine expansion etc

True CT, but it’s not something which would need to be mentioned in this document and Mike did confirm in interview just a few weeks ago that that investment is still happening so I personally think that should be accepted as accurate

C909, sort of agree, but he’s running a company, not a share price. And his management of the company has been pretty spot on

- Completion of environmental assessment at Ongombo (previously said to be very nearly complete)

- Funding of Ongombo

- Zambia Chipogo assays (previously pending)

- Zambia new drilling developments
