Also all the safety and control systems of the integrated process train from seabed to surface will need to be function tested and certified. All systems to be formally handed over to operations. Lastly permission to introduce hydrocarbons granted by the certifying authority.

Either is possible, but will go with you/single rope as the easiest/most likely!

DC, I think the rope is nominally whitish and the "orange or brown" tinge is just the reflection from a local floodlight.
A question is "is this rope the whole thing from ship to buoy or just the relatively light lead in rope that gets attached to the other bit on the buoy?"

I trust that the rope connector is ROV compatible, not just a standard shackle!?

I guess the main point I was making is that the ragged end of the rope attached to the buoy needs replacing. It could be as you say as much as 20+ metres. Even then with a fully buoyant rope this barely reaches the surface and will be hard to lasso, so how will this ragged rope be changed?

Rope must have failed within a few metres of the buoy as it was when it was about to be latched!!

Yes I agree that AM and GS will be re spooling a new rope and checking, etc. However I still think that there are 2 parts to the rope, part 1 is on the AM and part 2 is the heavier/stronger one attached to the buoy. Both need replacing IMO, part 1 being done now as you say!
Part 2 at the buoy may well be done by another vessel, and btw Olympic Zeus is on the move, so .........?

If we, the public/ship watchers, were not able to track the AM in all its movements via marine traffic then we would be ignorant of the 2 failed attempts of hook up, we wouldn't know where the AM was at any point in time! If this was in the desert (far from spying eyes) and not trackable/traceable and some operational "incident" occurred that was serious but did not impact the FOIL window or incur fatalities/injuries then it would probably not be RNS'd!? Equally if the AM was a heavy lift barge/drill rig, on station all the time, then an operational incident would not be RNS'd unless there was an impact to FOIL date or fatality/injury. So the "ship watchers" do make things far more visible and if there had been no RNS then rumours would have got out of hand, and eventually come out in the pubs of Aberdeen.
I agree with Aduk that if the 1H19 window for FOIL is missed/threatened then for sure they would have to fess up!!

I agree with the importance of the various rope incidents and such delays (since it works out as quite a few weeks, even though well within the 1H19 window for foil) that impact on production/cash flow, but HUR are definitely trying to withdraw to a position of being less open by saying no further RNS's til successful hookup!
I don't expect a running commentary, but certainly an RNS on any significant issues....hopefully no more on hook up now.
Moving on to commissioning/production, if there was for instance a valve or instrument failure, causing a another delay, then I wouldn't expect an RNS unless the delay was significant! (say greater than 7 days).

I think HUR regret giving a running commentary on snagged and failed ropes, so they have decided to shut up shop. To be fair to them rarely would a major company comment on such detail (can you imagine almost any other oil company doing so!?), and they wouldn't have done so except that they are acutely aware that the "ship watchers" know lots of detail and thus they felt the need to assuage the market! They are rightly assuming it will be hooked up without any further technical problems. However again if there were to be THEN........!?

Seems to be the only plausible explanation! Norway has lots of specialist rope suppliers, probably the biggest and best is Wilhelmsen. Take a look at their website and they talk about swell resistance ropes!!

I was not directly comparing the rope incident to Macondo! Not on the same scale at all! The reference was meant to emphasise that loss of reputation is a big thing and that would happen if there was another failure, god forbid!
Yes you are right that in the scheme of things in the O&G biz the rope is not a "major" incident, but certainly is of significant interest, from which lessons need to be learned.

There are 2 points to be considered here the potential impact of the incident on safety and the impact on business. There are clear quide lines/rules from the HSE on safety investigations and those will be followed. Also the company internal hse procedures will require that the incident be investigated as a near miss. Furthermore internal business procedures may well require the incident to be analysed from a potential impact on reputation and risk to cash flow.
From every angle they cannot afford another failure!
