RE: So what are our Options?2 Nov 2022 17:15
Spoke to my postie cousin today, he was parked up sat in the mail van with the engine running keeping warm. He would've usually been cracking on clearing his round and then seeing if there was any overtime rounds to clear but they have brought in SISO (scan in scan out) so he's now slowed right down to make sure he scans out at a later time and doesn't lose pay for finishing early.
He's far quicker than most in his office (that's why he goes in earlier and finishes his entire round earlier), but now there's no incentive to do so he's slowed to a snail's pace and takes his breaks/lunch when previously he didn't stop at all. His breaks are spent sat in a van burning diesel and he used to use his own car sometimes to speed up his round (if a van wasn't available) but now he said he's going to use a trolley and not his car so again, he'll take longer and complete the bare minimum.
Walks are failing daily because people like my cousin are no longer able to fly round their walks, get back to the D/O to pick up the slack and do half/all of another walk on overtime to make sure the office doesn't fail (and get more pay obviously). But now there's no incentive to work 'fast' so just like communism/socialism, the best/brightest are forced to drop to the level of the slowest/dumbest.
The amount of work completed will increase/decrease in direct proportion to the amount of TIME allocated to it. Tell someone they are in work until 1400, they'll finish what they need by 1400, tell someone they have x amount of tasks to fulfill and then they can go home, surprise surprise, they will be finished quicker.
This isn't getting any better and apathy is contagious, Royal Mail will be losing many more business customers in the near future (in my opinion), that will be reflected as additional losses in future financial results.
All the best, hope you get an agreement soon.
