USAID spent more than $ 73 million in Georgia in 2019 - Peter Wiebler
Author: Shota Tkeshelashvili
According to Peter Wiebler, head of the USAID Georgia office, the total volume of USAID spending in Georgia in 2019 exceeded $ 73 million ($ 219 million).
According to Wiebler, the tangible results achieved in Georgia in partnership with USAID are significant in terms of funding.
Because of the generosity of the American people, last year's USAID budget for Georgia was more than $ 73 million. This is the main number by which we have decided to support Georgia's democratic development, its inclusive economic growth and to protect it from harmful external influences.
At USAID, we say that numbers are important, but more importantly, these are tangible results that we are observing - these results tell us everything: we are helping Georgia's agricultural sector transform; We are helping Georgia to identify new attractive sectors that go beyond agriculture; We work with the civil society and the media in this country, we strengthen the executive branch - the government, we work with the parliament, and with the courts, with the private sector, "said Peter Wiebler.
The head of USAID in Georgia also spoke about foreign direct investment. He said that in order for investors to be interested in Georgia, they must have a guarantee that their investment in the country will be protected. In this regard, ensuring the independence of the judiciary and the efficiency of the judiciary, according to Peter Wiebler, is one of the crucial issues.
"What we are saying and the ambassador has made comments on this topic - to bring foreign direct investment into the country, to increase the volume of foreign direct investment, which we all want and know that the Georgian people want it, because it means increased economic potential - It is necessary to keep a few conditions.
First: Wherever they have to invest their money, investors need to make sure that their investment is protected. To be sure, there is a prospect that after a while their business will grow and they will see a profit from it - and I think it makes perfect sense in any case - be it America or Georgia.
Second, investors need to make sure that if any type of legal problem arises or a legal dispute arises - there is a strong judiciary in the country that respects the right to property and the rule of law.
This is something that investors in general pay special attention to. Because of this, the United States, through USAID, as well as other government agencies, is trying to help Georgia strengthen its judiciary so that the system is fair and more trusted, not only by investing companies, but also by the Georgian people themselves. ” Said Peter Wibbler.
