Stoopid and stockpickfree - I think you guys should carry on worrying as CBG shares continue their march higher towards 1x book value. The article today is a total game changer. It spells out clearly that the government will greatly limit the fall out from the whole motor finance court case if the SC does not reverse the CoA decision. The government has the power to do so, it has done so in the past in other cases and it will do so again with regard to this case. Because as the article points out (and as knot has endlessly pointed out on this board) the decision could spill over into the wider financial sector and cause mayhem. So the government will legislate to limit the impact on motor finance providers AND providers of other types of finance should the SC judgement uphold the CoA.

We need Chid to give us his view. Which will include the words "REEVES" and "Lloyds" and the phrases "the great unwashed" and "UK financial services". I have missed his trademark mangled syntax. Chid has the syntax of a Russian peasant attempting to to speak English without the peasant's intelligence of course.

I think the Guardian article is driving today's rise more than the news of the disposal. Investors have finally woken up to the fact that either the Supreme Court reverses the damage of the CoA judgement or the government/parliament will. In the UK system parliament is sovereign. Simple as that. Either way it will be good for Close shares.

Did the Supreme Court flag yesterday's LIBOR judgement a week in advance? Or did they just issue the judgement without prior warning?

This is a bank that trades at 0.4x book value and is about to enjoy several years of strong earnings growth as costs are cut and the business is focused on high return parts of the lending market. Crazy low valuation.

Correct - the company is up for sale.

Strange jump in the stock. We had a trading statement a few weeks ago. Cannot be anything to do with the performance of the company. The market is fully up to speed on that.

Shorters need to buy back 4.7 million shares to close out their short positions.

The shorts are gonna struggle to keep this stock down. Feels like they are losing control. They all want to close. Have a feeling today is the day the dam breaks.

Lee72 - surely if 2.6m shares traded at 27.6p there was both a buy and a sell. Someone bought 2.6m shares from someone else who sold 2.6m. Otherwise the trade would not have occurred. Right?
