Scotland sees surge in green hydrogen projects

Green hydrogen projects in Scotland have risen by two-thirds in just two years as the country makes progress in being a major exporter.

According to figures compiled by Scottish Enterprise, more than 100 projects – from Sullom Voe in Shetland to Chapelcross Dumfries and Galloway – are now in various stages of development, up from 61 in 2022.

UK Oil & Gas (UKOG) has raised £500,000 ($632,000) from investors to purchase land in East Yorkshire for a salt cavern hydrogen storage site.

UKOG has stated the project will be located at the UK’s “most extensive and thickest salt deposit and a key nationally strategic area for future hydrogen and existing natural gas storage.”

The farmland development area provides direct access to the North Sea for the brine necessary to dissolve the caverns and it will benefit from nearby material infrastructure projects, which will “greatly increase the likely probability of securing the necessary Development Consent Order (DCO).”

Furthermore, the salt cavern project will lie adjacent to the first construction phase of the National Gas’ Project Union hydrogen pipeline network and is situated near the East Coast hydrogen cluster.

H2 View understands that the acquisition of the site, along with UKOG’s Dorset sites, would provide the company with one of the largest single portfolios of potential salt cavern storage sites in the UK.

Additionally, UKOG will advance discussions with an energy infrastructure investor regarding participation in UKEn’s current Dorset and Yorkshire projects.

Stephen Sanderson, UKOG’s Chief Executive, commented on the new site. “The property is located firmly within the government’s East Coast Track hydrogen cluster and adjacent to the first phase of connection to Project Union, the planned national hydrogen pipeline network,” he said.

“Together with our primary Dorset project, the addition of this site will help grow the company’s hydrogen storage portfolio to one of the largest in the UK and position us to take advantage of the government’s planned Hydrogen Storage Allocation Round in 2025.”

European Commission reveals how it will calculate 25% limit on Chinese electrolysers

Restrictions for green hydrogen projects bidding for European Hydrogen Bank subsidies will extend to stacks, but not balance of plant

The upcoming €1.2bn ($1.3bn) European Hydrogen Bank auction will assess whether or not an electrolyser is “made in China” — and therefore subject to a 25% limit — by taking stock of the components used in individual stacks, the European Commission confirmed in a document published this week.

This means that any cell production, surface treatment or stack assembly in China would count towards the 25% limit.

AM: In November last year RWE announced a €55bn green investment programme and ambitions to grow renewables capacity to 65GW by 2030. Where does UK hydrogen fit in?

SS: UK hydrogen fits seamlessly into RWE’s growth strategy. We’re planning 2GW of electrolysis capacity in our core markets by 2030, including the UK, where our hydrogen activities target, in particular, the decarbonisation of heavy industries, like steel making and chemicals. This is because they need more than just green electricity, they also need a green alternative to carbon for their production processes.

Our hydrogen development team in the UK is driving forward large-scale green hydrogen projects in all areas of the country: our Pembroke Green Hydrogen project aims to construct up to 110MW of electrolysis capacity in South Wales by 2028; earlier this year we announced plans to develop a facility in Grangemouth up to 200MW, supporting decarbonisation in Scotland’s industrial heartlands; and we are working on a longer-term strategic project in Teesside.

Germany has approved its 9,040km hydrogen pipeline network, the “Wasserstoff-Kernnetz”, connecting hydrogen producers with decentralised offtakers across the country. ITM celebrates and congratulates Germany on this landmark decision.

This visionary infrastructure project represents a critical step towards realising a hydrogen economy:

Scale: This extensive network will enable large-scale transport of hydrogen, supporting industrial decarbonisation.

Connectivity: By linking production hubs to diverse end-users, it creates a true hydrogen ecosystem.

Market Development: The network provides certainty for both producers and offtakers, accelerating investment decisions and market growth.

Storage: The pipeline network itself will serve as a gigantic hydrogen storage facility, reducing the need for decentralised storage solutions significantly.

Energy Security: It enhances Germany's energy independence and resilience.

Economic Impact: Positions Germany as a leader in the hydrogen economy, driving innovation and job creation.

We see this as a lighthouse project with global implications. It demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investment can catalyse an entire industry. We anticipate this model being adopted across Europe and beyond.

Combined with Germany’s doubling of targets for domestic green hydrogen generation from 5 GW to 10 GW by 2030, their intention is clear.

The “Wasserstoff-Kernnetz” sets a new standard for hydrogen infrastructure development. We look forward to playing our part in supplying the electrolysers needed to produce the green hydrogen that will flow through this network.

The “Genuine People “ I’m referring to are Not huge fans or supporters of the Donald and I include family members in that group but they have Genuine Concerns that were not being dealt with, stop twisting everything around to suit your agenda and narrative which is the problem.

I use to watch the BBC every day and I haven’t bothered for a very long time & I have no intention too, that said I still pay my TV license but I believe that should be scrapped.

Dibs61, unfortunately you talking to people that don’t know what they are talking about, I have family in the States, Arizona, LA, Seattle and Dallas , they ALL agree the Donald is great for America, they ALL agree there has been a Which Hunt against the Donald and you rightly point out the Hunter Biden cover up. Just for clarity they all have widely differing views with regards to his character and they certainly are not in agreement as to liking him, but no difference to here with the shambles we have or across Europe and even Globally, we are living in strange times.

America also have many Hydrogen projects and facilities already up and running.

ITM’s largest market while Global appears to be European focused so the constant negativity about the USA is pointless.

I’ve recently come back from America (pre election) and the garbage news channels for both sides was absolutely disgraceful, similar to the BBC here, so biased.

The result though speaks for itself and again not dissimilar to the Brexit vote & result, unfortunately too many likeminded people blowing smoke up each others backside instead of listening to genuine people and their concerns!
