What do you get when you combine £6.5billion of private capital, 1GW of green hydrogen, and a consortium of some of the UK’s biggest industrial players? 🇬🇧🏭⚡️

You get HySpeed - the freshly launched hydrogen mega-project led by Jo Bamford’s HydraB Power group - who are setting out to build a national hydrogen backbone with no public money, no waiting for policy, and a plan to just get on with it.

“Now more than ever the UK needs to stand on its own two feet,” says Jo Bamford.

“Hydrogen offers us the opportunity to be energy secure and energy independent.”

Backed by Centrica (owners of British Gas), JCB, ITM Power, Johnson Matthey, Heidelberg Materials and National Gas, the project promises:

• 24,300 new jobs

• 1 million tonnes of CO₂ cut every year

• And hydrogen injected straight into the gas grid, fuelling steel, glass, chemicals and construction without the need for major site upgrades.

Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, calls it: “The most effective pathway to the rapid scale-up of the UK’s green hydrogen economy.”

Chris O'Shea, CEO of Centrica, says: “It will take every technology we have at our disposal to achieve Net Zero. Hydrogen can play a crucial role... It can be used to power the UK when the sun doesn’t shine, and the wind doesn’t blow.”

In July 2024, we reported a capacity reservation for four NEPTUNE II units, with an unnamed large utility company. Today, we are pleased to announce that in relation to this news, EDF Renewables UK & Ireland and Hynamics, a subsidiary of EDF Group, have selected us to execute a plant integration engineering package for Phase 1 of its Northeast-based Tees Green Hydrogen project.

 

The project will boost local industry and transportation by supplying green hydrogen to support decarbonisation efforts and significantly reduce industrial pollution, securing its long-term sustainability.

Where some fail others succeed , that’s life and thankful for the fact ITM have ~£205,000,000.00 Millions in cash and Zero Debt and together with order backlog give ~10 year runway without receiving further orders, which is highly unlikely given the £6.5Billions investment by HySpeed specifically for UK Green Hydrogen projects.

There will be consolidation within the Hydrogen Market, Dennis Schulz has mentioned this in recent RNS’ and ITM are now well positioned to benefit from this and with their Globally recognised and proven technology.

It has been a rough ride for hydrogen stocks lately, but one investment bank thinks there are still reasons to look closely at the UK names.

In a new sector update, RBC Capital Markets reiterated its preference for ITM Power PLC (AIM:ITM), keeping an 'outperform' rating and a 70p price target, suggesting plenty of upside from the current level.

ITM’s recent commercial momentum is encouraging. It raised revenue and cash guidance for 2025 and looks increasingly confident about its pipeline.

At today’s market cap, the market is effectively valuing ITM's cash pile but assigning little to no worth to the business itself. RBC believes that is far too pessimistic, especially given a more disciplined management team now in place.

Meanwhile, Ceres Power Holdings PLC (LSE:CWR, OTC:CPWHF) is still seen as a mixed story.

RBC has a 'sector perform' rating here and trimmed its price target to 90p from 110p.

The problem for Ceres lies in partner risk: after Bosch scaled back its involvement, questions hang over how fast Ceres can grow its royalty streams.

The solid oxide technology also lags behind better-established systems like PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysers when it comes to green hydrogen scale-up.

Across the sector, RBC expects consolidation to continue, particularly as funding conditions tighten.

But the UK remains in focus for green hydrogen development, helped by government-backed initiatives like the HySpeed project and HAR2 funding rounds. That should benefit domestic players like ITM.

In short, if investors are willing to look beyond the near-term volatility, there could still be real opportunities in the sector, and ITM Power looks better placed than most to make the most of them.
