bp and Aberdeen City Council have taken final investment decision (FID) to build a green hydrogen hub which is planned to start production in 2026.
The oil and gas major established a joint venture with the local council – bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy – to build the 300-tonne per year hydrogen hub to fuel vehicles operating in the city.
Expected to feature a hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility, a new solar farm will be installed to power the estimated 1.63MW of electrolysis for hydrogen production.
Now, the joint venture will start work towards construction, which it expects to begin before the end of 2024, with a target of producing green hydrogen from 2026.
Future phases of the project could see it scaled up to supply larger volumes for rail, freight, marine and potentially export.
Ian Yuill, Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader, said the project was “central” to the council’s vision of increasing hydrogen supply and demand.
Aberdeen in recent years has adopted various hydrogen-powered vehicles as it looks to meet Net Zero. Last year, ULEMCo secured a contract to convert 35 council vehicles to hydrogen dual-fuel systems.
bp Senior Vice-President Europe, Louise Kingham, said the city council deserved a “huge amount of credit” for progressing its low-carbon energy plans.
“For bp, this is further evidence of how we are backing Britain by investing in support of today’s energy needs and those of tomorrow,” she added.
Earlier this year, bp’s CEO Murray Auchincloss, said the oil and gas firm’s focus would be on blue hydrogen throughout the 2020s, with green hydrogen expected closer to 2030.
