Valencia, Spain - BP plans to develop 2GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 at its Castellón refinery in Spain. The refinery's transformation into green Hydrogen, biofuels and renewable energy production could see bp invest a total of up to €2 BILLIONS The production capacity could support both regional and national demand, as well as positioning the Valencia region for exports to the rest of Europe through the Mediterranean corridor of green Hydrogen H2Med.

"The first phase of the plan involves the installation of an electrolysis plant with at least 200 MW capacity at Castellón refinery by 2027, with a capacity to produce up to 31,200 tonnes of green H2 per year. This green Hydrogen will also be used as a feedstock for the production of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) at the refinery.

The European Sector Finally Taken Off For Hydrogen Projects

It’s like that old cliché about waiting ages for a bus and then three arriving at once.

Until last week, only two 100MW-plus green hydrogen projects in Europe had reached a final investment decision (FID) — Shell’s 200MW Holland Hydrogen 1 in the Netherlands and H2 Green Steel’s 740MW project in northern Sweden.

Then, last Wednesday, TotalEnergies announced it had taken FID on its 350MW OranjeWind

“Airbus is helping to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and all of its new aircraft will be able to run on it. The company is also investing BILLIONS of euros to try to fuel its jets on HYDROGEN . "We have HYDROGEN -powered cars, trucks, trains," Faury points out. "Why would we not be able to do it on aircraft? It is tougher than SAF.

There is a lot of engineering required. But we will find a way."

This week has seen several news stories about investments in green hydrogen production - confirmed commitments not signals of intent. See Links to official news releases in comments.

Shell announced FID (final investment decision) for the 100MW REFYNE II project which will supply green hydrogen from a ITM Power,

Linde Engineering PEM electrolyser for roughly 10% of the desulferisation needs of its largest refinery in Germany, near Cologne. Start of production 2027.

ATOME announced it has secured a head of terms agreement with Yara International

for the full offtake of its Green fertiliser Paraguay project - Factory SOP2027 with Calcium Ammonia Nitrate (CAN) output at peak of 264kT p.a. The sales agreement paves the way for FID later this year and would be the first 100MW+ project by an independent developer in the Americas

Utility EWE AG announced FID on a major Green hydrogen production facility in Emden, North Western Germany. The facility will deploy 280MW of PEM electrolysers supplied by Siemens Energy starting 2027, serving 4 green hydrogen projects along the coastline.

Ceres Power announced it has secured a second licensing partner for its solid-oxide electrolyser technology - another Asian OEM following on from news earlier this year that Taiwan based Delta Electronics had taken a license.
