Vast salt caverns designed to store hydrogen are to be excavated under Britain’s biggest former naval base as part of plans to bolster the country’s energy security.

Each the size of St Paul’s Cathedral, the 19 caverns will be dug under Portland Harbour in Dorset and filled with enough hydrogen to fuel a power station for days.

The hydrogen contained in the caverns will be reserved for emergency use and called upon when wind and solar farms are not generating enough energy to keep Britain’s lights on.

Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, is said to have not only backed the scheme but also altered the Government’s hydrogen storage business policy to ensure it can secure taxpayer subsidies.

UK Oil and Gas (UKOG), the company behind the scheme, has said it will seek planning permission within months.

Harland & Wolff's School Work Experience Programme is inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals!

Earlier this week, as part of the H&W School Work Experience Programme, students involved in the scheme had an incredible opportunity to visit our Ship Repair facility in Belfast.

Everyone at Harland & Wolff would like to say a huge thank you to our brilliant client, Villa Vie Residences, for granting unlimited access to their vessel, Odyssey, and its crew in support of the programme. The students were treated to a fascinating career talk by maritime engineering legend George Zeitler, before enjoying an insightful tour of the Engine Control Room and the Engine Room, guided by the engineering crew.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to Ship Repair GM Darren Jones, Ship Repair STEM Ambassador Alison McGrath, and Operations STEM Ambassador Nadine Corr for their support in organising and facilitating the visit. Special thanks to Operations Manager Bill Mawhinney for his mentorship and guidance as our tour guide, and to the entire Ship Repair team who took time out of their day to share their expertise and experiences with the students.

The students had a thoroughly enjoyable time and gained invaluable insights into the endless career opportunities within the maritime industry.

Five of a total order of 33 barges being built for the London-based waste management and recycling company Cory are under construction in Stornoway.

Fully complete and painted is Erne, and now being painted Lagan, while three others are at various stages of fabrication within the workshop. The barges are all named after Irish rivers.

They’ll be loaded out from Arnish individually, starting in two weeks’ time, with each being towed by a tug directly to the River Thames, where they will be put to work."

The future of Britain’s oil and gas industry has been thrown into doubt after a landmark decision by the Supreme Court.

The court ruled on Thursday that emissions from burning fossil fuels must be considered when approving new drilling sites.

Mr Sarwar will be joined on Wednesday by Labour’s shadow business secretary, Jonathan Reynolds, as he visits SGN’s H100 project, which is developing hydrogen energy for homes in Methil, Fife.

NI approach to blended gas and hydrogen still in play and so Islandmagee remains a potential enabler for the people of Northern Ireland.

It will be interesting to see how Northern Ireland deals with blended gas, surely a transition fuel (with up to 20% hydrogen) which the GB Transmission System Operator National Gas is looking to introduce in the near future. Positive that the Executive is up and running and can agree the way forward for NI.
