The new ICE Pact aims to address the disparity between the U.S. and Russian and Chinese icebreakers.

“With this announcement, we’re going to be able to scale up much faster with private investment,” the official said, with potential demand coming in from countries other than Canada and Finland, and that’s what’s going to allow us to meet our targets.”

The ICE Pact will involve enhanced cooperation between all three countries and a “consortium” of shipyards in the U.S., Canada and Finland, according to the U.S. official, who predicted the effort could cost around $10 billion.

The official added the goal is to have information and workers shared between all three countries to boost shipbuilding and lower costs, with the ultimate aim for all NATO allies to build some 70 to 90 ships over the next decade.

The NWF, which Reeves said would be established “in less than a week”, is designed to help projects such as ports, gigafactories, hydrogen and steel projects to attract a mix of investment, aiming for roughly £3 of private funds for every £1 of taxpayer cash.

Industry Day at H&W Appledore! 🌟

On 3rd July, the Harland & Wolff Appledore team proudly hosted a commercial marine-focused industry event, showcasing our extensive maritime design, build, and support capabilities. The event began with a warm welcome and registration, followed by an insightful overview of the H&W Group and a tour of the main manufacturing facility, including the pipe shop and outfitting fabrication areas. The event concluded with a visit to our Patent Slip and New Quay commissioning areas.

Industry colleagues, clients, OEMs, and SMEs from around 25 different UK and regional companies had the opportunity to meet our senior managers and operations team. This included a dock bottom inspection of the newly constructed KBS Cable Barge and M55 Regeneration projects, followed by an engaging presentation on our design, engineering, and technical strengths. We also disclosed future investment plans for a green maritime manufacturing and skills centre for emerging technologies.

We extend our thanks to all participants and our dedicated Appledore leadership team for making this event a success. Your continued support, collaboration, and partnerships are vital as we drive the future of marine engineering in North Devon and prepare for the first steel cut for the Fleet Solid Support Programme starting in Q1 2025.

So, we have a new government, and Labour's 'missions' have become the UK government's national missions.

There is a significant focus in the new government's plans on partnership between government and industry. For Harland & Wolff's part, we are committed to working with the government to achieve growth, deliver net zero, create new jobs, and enhance national defence capability. Like the rest of the maritime and marine engineering industries, we believe we have an important role to play across these missions.

We are pleased to see Jonathan Reynolds, Hilary Benn, and Ian Murray appointed to the Cabinet as Business & Trade Secretary, NI Secretary, and Scotland Secretary, respectively. We have welcomed them to Arnish, Belfast, and Methil recently and have valued the opportunity to discuss our future plans and introduce some of our 1,500 colleagues and 150 apprentices.

With four yards across Scotland, NI, and England, we look forward to working with the new government to deliver more high-quality, well-paid, sustainable jobs for all.

During the visit, the Scottish Labour Leader, said that the party's green prosperity plan would require government investment as well as partnership with private industry. He told the PA news agency: “It’s also, crucially, going to require collaboration and partnership with fantastic companies like Harland and Wolff, if we are to realise that full potential.”

Mr Sarwar continued: “What we want to do is invest in our port infrastructure, to invest in our supply chain infrastructure. There is huge potential in this site, for example, to ramp up that supply chain and that infrastructure, just like there is in other parts of the country as well.”
